This is particulary true of developing countries, where there is an urge n t nee d for s pee i a lis t s 0 f a 1 I kin d s and go v e r n me n t '5 expect a direct "return for the money they have invested i r: e d u c a t ion. professions. Some institutions prepare students from t r e start for one specific type of wo r k , for example, teacher training colleges, or s c ho o l s o f medicine or agriculture. _""-t the same tim~ the traditional seclusion of the scholary community has been disrupted. l n c r e a s i n g l y , universities and colleges are becoming part of the wideT community,instead of standing apart from it.

,St~dents have become directly involved in the affai~s of the country: especially in developing countries, where sone young people have worked for a few years before embarking orr their studies, and students in general are extremely conscious of their role~S the leaders of the future. -It is n o w quite c o rnm o n . for students to lead political demonstrations, they usually play a prominent role in revolutions, and they have even wielded intermational power by taking diplomats as hostagcs.

Nevertheless, many people thik that in focusing u p o n expertise rather than upon wisdom, modern education is missing out what is most v a l u e . It is still vital that Jrem

higher education students should above all acquire ~-q_\?Jao~~roo-" t hat is, a sen s e 0 f res po n sib i Li t Y for the a P {:' 1 i cat ion 0 f their k n cw l e d g e , an understanding of how t h e i r work is related to other areas of life, and a sense of values i n their own lives.

This does' not mean that moral values should be cic t a t e d from above, but that students should be confronted with general ideas as well as specialized i-nformation, and that t h e y

students remained uncommitted observers rather than premature participants, the benefits would ultimately be greater for society as a whole.
