Abstract:
During braking operation the kinetic and potential energy of moving automobile is converted in to heat energy
in the form of frictional heat between lining and drum. The high temperatures generated causes change in material
properties which in turn cause brake fade. One of such changing material properties is coefficient of friction. In the
present study influence of rise in temperature and affect of convection on brake fade is analyzed by ignoring
radiation and assuming constant pressure is being applied by shoe on brake drum.
Frictional heat generated between brake lining and drum is calculated from the change in kinetic energy during the
braking period. Heat flux is calculated from the heat energy generated during the braking. The obtained heat flux
value is given as a boundary condition along with convection for transient thermal analysis. The affect of convection
is analyzed for three cases, first case is with zero convection, in second case convection coefficient is obtained from
CFD analysis by assuming drum brake is completely open to air and in the third case convection coefficient taken
from literature. Transient thermal analysis is carried out for single brake cycle and as well as fade cycle braking.
Rise in temperature with respect to braking and time are obtained from transient thermal analysis. Coefficient of
friction values with respect to resulted temperatures are tabulated and brake torque is calculated from these values.
Based on the simulation results it observed that with zero convection brake torque in fade cycle is reduced by 25%
for maximum temperatures in assembly and 12.5% for average of temperatures on the lining surface. It is also
observed that convection has significant affect on brake fade, which shows that with convection of 173 W/m^2K
no brake fade is observed in present study.
