Artifact II for Standard Four: Multiple Instructional Strategies

Name of Artifact: Lesson Plan Assignment for TSL645

Date: Fall 2010

Course: TSL645 Reading in ESL/EFL Instruction

Rationale

In support of Standard 4, Multiple Instructional Strategies, I offer this artifact “Lesson

Plan Assignment for TSL645,” that I created for TSL645 Reading in ESL/EFL Instruction.

Instructional strategies are tied to the needs and interests of students and are based on the many

types of learning styles (Ekwensi, Moranski & Townsend-Sweet, n.d.). This lesson plan was

designed for a fictitious adult ESL high intermediate reading class at a community college that

met for 60 minutes 3 times per week. The premise was that these students would be continuing

their academic studies at a 4-year university; and as such, needed a thorough grasp of academic

vocabulary, in addition to excellent reading comprehension and critical thinking skills. In the

plan, I utilized multiple instructional strategies designed to expose students to academic

vocabulary, stimulate their critical thinking skills through the use of metacognitive awareness

guidance (MCAG) questions, and answer reading comprehension questions based on the

benchmark for Texas adult education that requires students to comprehend, interpret, and draw

conclusions about material in a text. The lesson plan was created in Microsoft PowerPoint and its

design utilized my creative skills, in addition to the academic knowledge required for the actual

lesson. I am including this artifact in Standard 4 because I feel it demonstrates my ability to

design practical (and fun) lesson plans utilizing multiple instructional strategies that meet the

diverse needs of my future ESL students.
