The Innovation Performance Management Manifesto

Over the last year, Innomation has defined and evangelized the term Innovation
Performance Management (IPM). This manifesto summarizes some concepts to
provide a platform for further development and debate.

IPM is a subset of business performance management (BPM). Like BPM, the

three letter acronym IPM can also be interpreted in two ways; either as innova-
tion performance management or innovation process management. The position
taken by Innomation is that IPM (performance) is the strategic version of the
tactical IPM (process). Innovation performance management depends on having
an innovation process in place, so these variants of the term are synergistic.

Innovation Performance Management (IPM) is based on the assumption that

1. Innovation is an embedded component of corporate culture

2. Innovation is viewed as a core competency business process
3. Innovation management technology is a means to implement 1 and 2

IPM is unlikely to succeed in a corporate culture that does not recognize, respect
and actively reward innovation. IPM depends on a business process that sets out
to systematically generate, convert and realize the value of innovation. And this
process depends on the support of the emerging market of innovation manage-
ment technology for automation and analytics.

But what does innovation performance management care about? The scope of
IPM encompasses at least three aspirations

1. To sustain repetitive and routine innovation

2. To improve the quality of innovation efforts
3. To expand the capacity for innovation

IPM encourages the view of innovation as a sustainable activity that can be re-
peated. By doing the basics of performance management - setting goals, monitor-
ing and managing those goals - IPM can help to improve the quality of innova-
tion efforts throughout the innovation process. And by raising the profile and ef-
fectiveness of innovation as a core business competency, IPM lays the ground-
work for an organization to do more innovation and be more innovative.

IPM is simply the application of a performance management perspective to inno-

vation and reflects the position that innovation is a business process that can be
automated and improved like any other.
