The Questionmark Corporation is a major supplier of online assessment software ( E-assessment) to educational institutions, public sector employers and major com mercial companies worldwide, the Staff and Educational Development Association o f UK Universities outlines this and some of the resources of CAA, including Ques tionmark. The company was started in 1988 by current chairman John Kleeman. Majo r markets are across Europe (particularly the UK) and North America. The current CEO is Eric Shepherd. The company's flagship product is Perception, an application which deploys compu ter-based assessments through the web or Windows, for online or offline delivery . The company claims to have a true blended approach to online assessment, as as sessments can be authored through Windows, the web, or imported from Word or oth er QTI-compliant applications, and delivered online through web browser, offline on a CD or other removable medium, or even on paper. The current version of Per ception is 4.4. In the UK, many major universities use Perception, and in a recent survey it was found to be a more prevalent assessment engine than Blackboard alone1. Institut ions using Perception include Edinburgh, Essex, Oxford, Cardiff, Glamorgan, Sout hampton, Dundee, Loughborough, Leeds, Swansea, Salford, Bradford, UWIC, Pembroke shire, Bristol, Exeter, Plymouth, Aberystwyth, Gloucester, Hertfordshire, Thames Valley (a non-exhaustive list). Questionmark's contribution to e-Assessment to Higher Education in the UK is specifically referenced in the 'e-Assessment roadm ap' project written by the Open University for JISC (Joint Information Systems C ommittee). Questionmark holds an annual users' conference in North America, and an academic symposium in the UK, prior to the Loughborough CAA conference. Questionmark were the originators of the QTI interoperability standard for CAA q uestion interchange, which was based on their QML language, and were involved in the recent update.
