(Electrical & Electronic Engineering)
Time: 3 hours Max Marks: 80
Answer any FIVE Questions
All Questions carry equal marks
?????

1. (a) What are the Processes that are responsible for the breakdown of the gases. Explain any one in
detail.
(b) Explain the process of electron attachment in insulating gases. [8+8]
2. (a) What is Pachen’s law? How do you account for the minimum voltage for breakdown under a
given ‘p x d’ condition?
(b) Describe the various factors that influence breakdown in a gas. [8+8]
3. (a) What are the procedure and conditions required for breakdown testing of liquid dielectrics?
(b) What is stressed oil volume theory and how does it explain breakdown in large volumes of com-
mercial liquid dielectrics? [8+8]
4. (a) Why is a Cockroft - Walton circuit preferred for voltage multiplier?
(b) Explain Cockroft - Walton circuit with a schematic diagram. [6+10]
5. Give different circuits that produce impulse waves explaining clearly their relative merits and
demerits. [16]
6. Discuss the construction of a uniform field spark gap and discuss its advantages and disadvantages
for high voltage measurements. [16]
7. (a) Write short notes on capacitance Potential Dividers.
(b) A peak reading voltmeters is required to measure voltage upto 150kV. The peak voltmeter uses
an R-C circuit, a Microammeter and a capacitance potential divider. The potential divider has a
ratio of 1200:1 and the Microammeter can read upto 10 Micro amperes. Determine the values of
R and C if the time constant of RC circuit is 8 sec. [8+8]
8. (a) With the aid of suitable diagrams describe briefly the high voltage Schering bridge for the mea-
surement of capacitance and loss tangent at power frequency.
(b) A 76.2 kV, 50 Hz, single phase cable is made up of an insulating material with a permittivity of
4.4 and a loss factor of 0.003. If the diameter of the core is 30 mm and the diameter over the
insulation is 45 mm, determine the dielectric loss per unit length of cable. [8+8]
