Confederate Struggle for Recognition

The South had three chances for victory, They needed recognition, financial
aid, and foreign military involvement. The faults assumption was that Eng-
land needed more American cotton than it actually did. The emancipation
proclamation prevented any foreign nation from helping the Confederacy.

Clara Barton

Women in the war served as nurses. The legacy of Clara Barton was that she
started the Red Cross. The Women’s liberation movement sped up by 50
years.

American Plan

Winfield Scott says to blockade the south, Defend D.C. While pressuring Rich-
mond. Divide and invade the confederacy along the Cumberland the Ten-
nessee, the Mississippi rivers. The confederates plan to fight to a stalemate,
then rely on Northern or foreign sympathy.

The Draft

other way, and so was a key job. Owning 20 plus slaves. It is commonly
called a rich mans war. The North started theirs in 1863, $300 or a substitute
got you out. Substitutes often ran away and subbed in more than one place.
Riots over the draft occurred over New York and Detroit.

The Naval campaign was in 1861 and 1862, it involved the Atlantic and Gulf
Coast. They are the first iron clad ships.

William Quantrill

He is a former who led pro slavery teenagers. Two of whom were Frank and
Jesse James. Jay Hawkers were abolitionist who opposed Quantrils Raiders.
