INTRODUCTION.

 An induction motor is an asynchronous AC motor where power is transferred to the rotor by

electromagnetic induction. An induction motor resembles a rotating transformer, because the
stator (stationary part) is essentially the primary side of the transformer and the rotor (rotating
part) is the secondary side. Polyphase induction motors are widely used in industry.

Slip Energy Recovery

 A major drawback of rotor resistance control is that the available power of the machine is
being reduced by diverting power to additional losses. Ideally, the power diverted from
the mechanical system is recovered, reducing total energy consumption. This approach is
called slip energy recovery.

Applications

 Three phase induction motors are used wherever the application depends on AC power .
 Suitable for high power applications as they don’t need commutators.
 Power handling capacities ranging from a few Watts to more than 10 MegaWatts.
 Mainly used for heavy industrial applications and for machine tools.
 Use in automotive applications for electric and hybrid electric vehicles .
 induction motors can now be run from a DC source aswell with the availability of
availability of solid state inverters.
