ENGR 0135 2111 – Practice Midterm 3 – Closed book, closed notes, individual – 60 minutes

(May be submitted as a bonus quiz - Please indicate the time you start and end)

1. Determine the x and y coordinates of the 2D shape shown in the figure below.

Solution:
Consider the area below the curve (area 1) and area below the line (a triangular shape, area 2).
Analyzing area 1:
Considering a vertical element area, then the area of the element is given by dA = ydx and the area
below the curve is given by
Following, we can compute area moments about x and y axis: Mx and My;

And then compute the centroid with respect to the origin O;

and

Analyzing area 2,
It is easy to see that A2 = b2/8 and the centroid is located at x2 = b+1/3*b/2 = 7/6 b and y2 = 1/3*b/2 =
1/6 b.

Analyzing the composite area of 1 and 2;

Total area A = A1 + A2 = b2/6 + b2/8 = 0.292 b2.
Total moment about x (Mx) = y1*A1 + y2*A2 = 0.15 b*b2/6 + b/6*b2/8 = 0.04583 b3
Total moment about y (My) = x1*A1 + x2*A2 = 0.75 b*b2/6 + 7/6 b*b2/8 = 0.27083 b3

The centroid coordinates; xC = My/A = 0.928 b and yC = Mx/A = 0.157 b.

2. Determine the support reaction forces on the pin A (Ax and Ay) and roller B of the 2D
structure shown in the figure on the left. The weight of the cylinder is 5000 lb. Please use the
given coordinate system to indicate the directions of the reactions on A.

Solution:
In answering this problem, the best practice is
to analyze the problem based on a coordinate
system that is aligned to the beam AB and
then transform the answer to the given xy
coordinate system. Let’s indicate the
coordinate system for analysis as pq
coordinate system as shown in the FBD
below.

The force balance in the p direction is

given by;

Ap = - W sin 30 = - 5000 . ½ = - 2500 lb

The moment balance about B may help

us in getting Aq;

Aq =-5000*(3.cos 30+4.sin 30)/18 = -22990.38/18 = -1277.24 lb

The force balance in the q direction is given by;

So, B = 5000*cos 30 + 1277.24 = 5607.37 lb

To transform the reactions at A, Ap and Aq, into that in the x and y directions, we use;
3. Determine the forces (reaction, applied and pin forces) acting on the member ABCD in the
frame shown in the figure on the right;

4. Determine the elongations (displacements) of

the members A and B shown in the frame on
the left. The frame is made out of steel (E =
30,000 ksi) and the cross-sectional area of its
members are 2 in2.
