Alexandria, the city founded by Alexander the Great in 331 B.C.

, is the second
largest city of ancient Egypt. Its least common name would be “The Pearl of the
Mediterranean”. Alexandria featured a healthy climate and advanced city planning.
Alexandria had many types of people with different cultures, languages, and religion.
These factors provided made this city a diverse cultural epicenter. This city can be
compared to modern day New York.

Here in New York, there are a variety of cultures ranging from India, to Russia,
Jamaica and even Italy. Its cultural population is similar to Alexandria’s because there
is a distinct overall culture of New York. Alexandria had three harbors. They were
known as the Great harbor, the Western harbor and another harbor that was actually
a large lake, connected to the Nile River. When arriving into Alexandria, visitors can
see Pharos, a colossal size lighthouse. This is the same as New York’s Statue of Liberty.
Also, both of these sites were named after the area which they stood on. The planning
of New York’s street was based on numbers going north and south, then east and
west. In Alexandria, the planning was to have each road cross at a 90 degree angle.
Canopus Street was the largest street (width and length) in Alexandria. This compares
to Broadway which extends about 18 miles long. Even though there are many
similarities to compare these two great cities, there are also things which make them
completely different. Alexandria had different class structures where the Greeks
would have more power. New York is mainly democratic so the people have no title
like those. But still, Alexandria was a popular tourist attraction just like New York City
is, which added on to its great culture.
