Historical overview of Renaissance, Mannerist and Baroque art of the 14th to 17th
centuries, including Giotto, Leonardo, Michelangelo and Bernini.

This course is in lecture format, and focuses on the realities and myths of Renaissance and Baroque art
from the 14th-17th centuries. We begin with the Italian Renaissance, and consider topics such as the
reinterpretation of antiquity, the development of scientific perspective, new approaches to painting,
sculpture and architecture, and the rise of secular humanism in court contexts. Moving to the Northern
Renaissance, we will consider new approaches to light and colour, and the revolution of printmaking, in
Germany and the Netherlands. The impact of the Reformation, as well as the emergence of Mannerism
as a vital style will be analyzed. This will prepare the way for our discussion of Baroque art in both Italy
and Northern Europe, and themes such as patronage, theatricality, and the cult of the artist.
