Semester 2, 2010
Assignment 2
Place your assignment in your tutor’s Calculus 2 assignment box in the
Richard Berry building before 11am on Monday 4th October.

1. Consider the differential equation:

dx
= 2x3 − 8x.
dt
dx
(a) Draw the phase plane diagram versus x, indicating any equilibrium points.
dt
(b) Using part (a), draw a rough sketch of x(t) showing the different types of solution
behaviour.
(c) Determine whether the equilibrium points are stable or unstable.
(d) Determine the equation of the solution curve if x = 1 at t = 0. Write your solution
in the form x = f (t).

2. Consider the differential equation:

dy x2
−y = .
2 (1)
dx y
Make the substitution u = y 2 and show that the differential equation (1) reduces to
du
− u = x2 . (2)
dx
Solve equation (2) and hence find the solution of equation (1) given that y(0) = −1.
Write your solution in the form y = f (x).

Note: Marks will be awarded for working as well as for the final answer.
