CHAPTER FIVE
ARITHMETIC PROGRESSION
EXERCISES
2. The sum of the third and the seventh terms of an AP is 6 and their product is 8. Find
the sum of first sixteen terms of the AP.
Solution:
We know that the n th term of an Arithmetic Progression, whose
First term = a
and Common Difference = d
is given by
an = a + (n - 1 ) d
∴ a3 = a + (3 - 1 ) d = a + 2 d
a 7 = a + ( 7 - 1 ) d = a + 6d
The sum of the third and the seventh terms of an AP is 6
⇒ a 3 + a 7 = ( a + 2 d ) + ( a + 6d ) = 6
⇒ 2 a + 8d = 6
⇒ a + 4d = 3
⇒ a = 3 − 4d
and the product of the third and the seventh terms of that AP is 8.
⇒ a 3 × a 7 = ( a + 2 d ) × ( a + 6d ) = 8
⇒ ( a + 2 d ) × ( a + 6d ) = 8
⇒ ( 3 − 4d + 2 d ) × ( 3 − 4d + 6d ) = 8
⇒ ( 3 − 2d ) × ( 3 + 2d ) = 8
⇒ 9 − 4d 2 = 8
⇒ 4d 2 = 9 − 8 = 1
