Assignment
Enclosed is a MATLAB program of a linear adaptive channel equalizer based on the
Lease Mean Square (LMS) algorithm in Gaussian noise channels. Some details on the
operation of the LMS equalizer can be found in the lecture slide or relevant reference
books.

In this MATLAB program, the equalizer length is set equal to the intersymbol
interference (ISI) channel length. For better performance, the equalizer length should be
increased. Study the MATLAB program given carefully and modify it to perform the
following tasks:
1) Study the effect of convergence by varying the step size, signal-to-noise (SNR)
ratio, ISI channel length, equalizer length, and training period. Display the
convergence curves obtained and discuss your observations.
2) Assume that the channel ISI is time invariant, thus after the training period is
over, the last equalizer weight vector obtained can be fixed and used subsequently
to equalize the channel. Modify the program by adding an additional 10,000 bits
after the training bits and evaluate the bit error rate ( = number of bits in
error/total number of bits transmitted) performance during the data transmission
process; i.e., evaluate the BER of the 10,000 bits of data equalized using the
weight vector obtained during the training phase. Tabulate your BER results in
terms of different SNR values and training periods. (Hint: The typical BER for the
equalized data at an SNR of 20 dB is usually less than 0.2 for a 5-tap channel and
equalizer. If you cannot obtain such result, it is very likely that there are errors in
your program.)

Prepare a report, show your MATLAB programs and discuss your findings. The report
should cover among others: introduction, simulation results, discussion, and conclusion.
