The UK Food and Drinks Report 2009

The UK has one of the largest retail food markets in both Europe and the world, with value sales having
risen by around 3% per annum since 2004. However, volume sales have risen only very marginally across
many product categories, with consumption having actually declined in some instances. Until the
economic downturn, growth in market value was sustained by growing consumer demand for premium
and speciality foods, although more people are now seeking value for money when shopping for
groceries. Rising food prices have also been apparent in sectors such as bakery and dairy, due to the
escalating cost of key ingredients. The UK Food & Drinks Report 2009 is a new publication from
Leatherhead Food Research. The report covers 22 different product sectors, providing information such
as market size and segmentation, new product activity and industry supply. The report also contains an
overview of key market drivers, as well as an analysis of latest merger and acquisition activity in the
industry
