Communication

• It is a process that allows exchange of information by several methods


• Defined as a process by which we assign and convey meaning in an attempt to
create shared understanding.
• Plays an important role in delivering health care services effectively
notwithstanding the existence of cultural diversity, transcultural barriers and other
elements that could disrupt the optimum provision of health care related services.
• Dyad – typical communication between 2 individuals
• Mutual understanding and clear communication are some of the prerequisites to
achieve harmony in every form of human interaction
• Harmony is elusive in an interaction where there are cultural diversity and
transcultural barriers

Five behavioral “Know-hows” (Munoz and Luckmann)


• They must be aware of how and when to start a conversation
• The aid of language specialists may be asked to interpret a particular conversation
• They must know how to deal with the patient’s behaviors and gestures
• They must be able to satisfy their patient’s concern immediately
• Health workers must be aware of their pt.sensitivity and behavior

Language and its Communicational Function


• Communication involves language. Language may be in form of tactile, auditory
and visual symbols
• Symbols are also used to express one’s feelings, reactions and ideas.
• Language may come in 2 forms: Oral and Body

1. Ethnic, racial and cultural diversity are rapidly increasing in every society
2. Patients personify ethnic and cultural populations which are normally
disenfranchised because of acculturation and other external patterns of behavior
3. Varying contexts and definitions of health and illness.
4. Conflict between traditional and modern health care services.
5. Health care professions are committed to provide culturally appropriate and
humanistic care

Role of Transcultural Communication in the Increasing Diversity of the population

• Diversity is brought about by the integration of cultures, beliefs and traditions
coming from the combination of rural and urban practices
• However, cultural and racial diversity are more prevalent in urban societies
because of the continuous migration of people from rural areas
• Healthcare professionals must be competent enough to address the issues
concerning cultural and racial diversity.
