PAULO FREIRE

(Sept. 19, 1921 – May 2, 1997)


`I didn’t understand anything because of my hunger. I
wasn’t dumb.It wasn’t lack of interest. My social
condition didn’t allow me to have an education.
Experience showed me once again the relationship
between social class and knowledge’

• studied law, philosophy / phenomenology and psychology of
language
• teaching portuguese in secondary school
•Married to Elza Maia Costa de Oliveira-teacher
•1961, became the Director of the Department of Cultural
• Extension, Recife University
Applied – theories- 300 sugarcane workers-45 days
-Military Coup – prisoned as a traitor(70 days) – Exiled-Bolivia
Worked in Chile-5 years

• most famous, Pedagogy of the Oppressed, published in Portugese(1968).
•A visiting Profesorship at Harvard University, 1969
•1970- Pedagogy of the Opressed-published in Spanish and English
•1974- published in Brazil (military dictatorship)
•Taught in Cambridge
•Geneva-special advisor to the World Concil of Churches(advisor on ed.
Refor in former Portuguese colonies in Africa
1979-returned to Brazil
Joined the Workers’ Party (PT) – Secretary of Ed. For Sao Paulo
1986- Elza died, married Maria Araujo
DIED OF HEART FAILURE ON 2ND May 1997 in Sao Paulo-76 years
