PRL 605: PUBLIC RELATIONS WRITING CLASS ASSIGNMENT - FOR CLASS PURPOSES ONLY

Internal Employee Memorandum for American Cancer Society - Syracuse Division

Date: December 9, 2010

Subject: Official Announcement of Retirement

To: All Employees

From: Michael Scott

I am very proud of all we have accomplished as a united front in the fight against cancer. Together, we
have raised significant funds for cancer research and touched countless families affected by cancer in
the Syracuse metropolitan area. Due to personal reasons, I am announcing my retirement, effective
Dec. 31.

As many of you know, I have two wonderful, twin teenage daughters who began high school this past
September. I feel compelled to reduce my work hours and spend more time with my family, as my
daughters will be leaving for college in a few short years.

After serving seven years as director of fundraising and six years as president, I will continue my
involvement as a member of the board of directors for the Syracuse division.

I am pleased to announce the board of directors has unanimously elected Vice President of
Fundraising Development Adriana Lima to the position of president, effective Jan. 1. Please join me in
offering her our congratulations as I know she will do a phenomenal job.

During the next month, Lima and I will be meeting regularly in order to ensure a smooth transition.
We will be holding an office-wide transition meeting on Dec. 15 at 3 p.m. in the Dr. John Seffrin
conference room. This meeting will be open to all employees of the Syracuse office and I encourage
you all to attend. Lima and I will be available to address your questions, comments or concerns
regarding the transition. Lima will also be presenting specific plans for the first quarter of 2011 and
general plans for the year of 2011. Refreshments will be provided.

Thank you for your continued support and effort in our quest to find a cure.

Sincerely,

Michael Scott
President, American Cancer Society – Syracuse Division
