WASHINGTON, DC, Wednesday, March 16, 2011 – Africare, the United States’ oldest non-profit
organization providing development assistance exclusively to Africa, is very pleased to announce
that it has selected two transformational Brazilian leaders to be honored at its Bishop John T.
Walker Memorial Gala which will be held in November 2011 in Washington, DC.

Former Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will receive Africare’s prestigious
Achievement Award, which was bestowed upon former President Nelson Mandela last year. This
year’s award to President Lula will be in recognition of his very strong personal leadership and
continuing commitment to Africa.

Mr. Roger Agnelli, Chairman and CEO of Brazil’s Vale, the second largest diversified mining
company in the world, will receive Africare’s Corporate Service Award, which was awarded last
year to Mr. Rex W. Tillerson, Chairman and CEO of Exxon Mobil Corporation. The award to Mr.
Agnelli this year will be in recognition of his leadership of Vale’s efforts to support economic
development in Africa.

Africare’s President, Dr. Darius Mans, says, “Africare is very proud to be associated with Brazil’s
efforts to support Africa’s development under President Lula’s administration, which are expected
to expand even further under the new Dilma administration. I am confident that Africare’s
partnership with Vale in Africa will substantially strengthen our capacity to build futures and
improve lives across the continent.”
