EXPERIMENT TITLE :

Aggregate impact value test

EXPERIMENT PURPOSE :

To
determine value aggregate impact is needed in the design us
es a mixture of various pavement layers.

MATERIAL AND APPARATUS

1. Impact tester

2. Sieve 14mm, 10mm, 2.36mm

3. Trays
4. Rod packing

5. Rubber pounder

6. Bristle brush

7. Weighing

PROSEDURE
1. Aggregate samples are sieved using a sieve 14mm and 10mm. The
aggregate sample must be dried in the oven no more than 4 hours at a
temperature of 105 (approximately 5ºc). Aggregate to
be tested must pass a 10mm sieve.

2. Sample is put into the measuring cup in three

increments. Compacting each layer with 25 times
the thrust using a 10mm steel rod at a free drop from a height of 50mm
from the surface of the sample.

3. Aggregate surface using a smooth steel rod. Dispose of

excess aggregate and reduced the added.

4. steel bowl in pairs with neat tools and in the aggregate,

and aggregate into a bowl andcompacting using rod packing as much as
25 times the thrust.
5. Knocker height adjusted so that the
surface is 350 (approximately 5mm) of the sample
surface. Knocker in shock as much as 15 times.

6. Remove samples from the steel bowl using a rubber pounder and put in
the tray. Bristle brush is used to produce the
samples. Sample weights to the nearest 0.1g (M1).

7. 2.36mm sieved samples using a sieve so that there is no sample that can
pass
through the sieve. Sample weights are passed sieve (M2) and the retaine
d (M3) to the nearest 0.1g. If the total mass (M2 + M3) is different from
the M1 more than 1g ignore the results and run tests on other samples.

8. Repeat the procedure 1 to 7 for the second sample.

9. Aggregate impact value (aiv) the two samples is

calculated and set to a percentage of the decimal point using the
following equation: -

DISSCUSION
Chief advantage of aggregate impact test is that test
equipment and the test procedure are quite simple and it
determines the resistance to impact of stones simulating
field condition.
The test can be performed in a short time even at
construction site or at stone quarry, as the apparatus is
simple and portable.

CONCLUSION

Well shaped cubical stones provide higher resistance to

impact when compared with flaky and elongated stones.
If all the test specimens to be tested in the aggregate impact
testing mould are of equal volume, the height of these
specimens will also be equal and hence the height of fall of
the impact hammer on the specimens will be equal.
From the experiment the value of AIV is 19.10% and this is
acceptable because the value is less than the value of
predetermined AIV is 30%.

QUESTION
Give the important of aggregate value impact
value towards pavement

I. It is used to determine the crushing strength

of aggregates.
II.The aggregate crushing value provides a
relative measure of resistance to crushing
under gradually applied crushing load.
III. To test the hardness property of aggregates
and to decide whether they are suitable for
different pavement construction works.
