Objective: Percents, fractions and decimals.

In this section, you will learn how to change percents to fractions and fractions to percents.
Also, you will learn how to change percents to decimals and decimals to percents.

Percent means “per hundred”. A percent is a ratio, fraction, with a denominator of 100.

Example 1 Writing Percents as Fractions and Fractions as Percents.

Writing (a)29% and (b)45% as fractions in simplest form.

Write (a) and (b) as percents.

(a) What can you multiply the numerator, and denominator, by so that the
denominator would equal 100?

(b) What can you multiply the numerator, and denominator, by so that the
denominator would equal 100?

Percents and Decimals

 To write a decimal as a percent, move the decimal point two place values
to the right and write a percent sign.

 To write a percent as a decimal, move the decimal point two place values
to the left and take away the percent sign.
Example 2 Writing Decimals as Percents.

Write 0.65, 1, and 4.2 as percents.

Solution

0.65 = 0.65 1 = 1.00 4.2 = 4.20

= 65% = 100% = 420%

Example 3 Writing Percents as Decimals.

Write 57%, 0.78%, and 230% as decimals.

Solution

57% = 57% 0.78% = 0.78% 230% = 230%

= 0.78
= .57 = 2.3
= .0078
The decimal moves two place values
to the left and you fill in the blank
place values with zeros.

Suppose you are given a fraction, with a denominator that is not a factor of 100, and told
to write it as a percent.

These are the steps to solving a problem such as this;

1. Divide the denominator into the numerator. Your answer will be a decimal.
2. Follow the steps in Example 2, above.

Example 4 Writing Fractions as Percents.

Write as a percent rounded to the 10ths place value.

a) Write the fraction as a decimal.

Write the decimal as a percent.
= 42.9%

b) Write the fraction as a decimal.

= 150% Write the decimal as a percent.
