Classification
Transducers and sensors can be classified into two basic types, depending on
the shape of the converted signal. The two types are:
• Analog transducers
• Digital transducers

Digital Transducers
Digital transducers produce a digital output signal in the form of a set of status
bits in parallel or in a series of keystrokes that can be counted. In one way or
another, the digital signals representing the value of the measured variable.
Digital transducers typically offer the advantage of being more compatible with
digital computers, analogue sensors in automation and process control.
Characteristics of Transducers:
Accuracy
Operating Range:
Operating Range: The sensor must have a wide operating range and must be
accurate and precise throughout the range.
Response Rate:
Reliability:
Reliability: The sensor must have high reliability. Should not be subject to
frequent failures during operation.
