What is a transducer?
On transducer is a device that transforms one type of physical variable (eg,
force, pressure, temperature, speed, etc..) in another.

Classification

Transducers and sensors can be classified into two basic types, depending on
the shape of the converted signal. The two types are:

• Analog transducers

• Digital transducers

Analog transducers

Analog transducers provide a continuous analog signal, eg voltage or current.

This signal can be taken as the value of the physical variable being measured.

Digital Transducers

Digital transducers produce a digital output signal in the form of a set of status
bits in parallel or in a series of keystrokes that can be counted. In one way or
another, the digital signals representing the value of the measured variable.
Digital transducers typically offer the advantage of being more compatible with
digital computers, analogue sensors in automation and process control.

Characteristics of Transducers:

Accuracy

Accuracy The accuracy of measurement should be as high as possible.

Accuracy means that the true value of the variable can be detected without
positive or negative systematic errors in measurement.

Operating Range:

Operating Range: The sensor must have a wide operating range and must be
accurate and precise throughout the range.

Response Rate:

Response Rate: The transducer must be able to respond to changes in the

variable detected in minimal time. Ideally, an instant response.

Reliability:
Reliability: The sensor must have high reliability. Should not be subject to
frequent failures during operation.
