Essay on Dream was first published in 1807. Mr. Paine attempts to show by what op ration of the mind a Dream is produced in sleep, and applying the same to he account of Dreams in the New Testament. Biblical B asphemy is a short work summarizing Mr. Paine's Deistic beliefs. Examina ion of the Prophecies was first published by Mr. Paine in 1807, and was he last of his writings edited by himself. About the Author Thomas Paine (1737 -1809) "Thomas Paine ... was a pamphleteer, revolutionary, rad cal, liberal and intellectual. Born in Great Britain, he lived in America, ha ing migrated to the American colonies just in time to take part in the Amer can Revolution, mainly as the author of the powerful, widely read pamphlet, Common Sense (1776), advocating inde pende nce for the Ame rica n C 10 nies from the Kingdom of Great Britain and of The American Crisis, supporting the Revolution. Later, Paine was a great influence on the French Revolution. He wrote the Rights of Ma n (1791) as a gu ide to the ideas of the Enlight nment. Despite an inability to speak French, he was elected to the rench National Asse mbly in 1792. Regarded as an aIly of the Girond ists, h was see n with increasing disfavour by the Montagnards and in particular b Robespierre. Paine was arrested in Paris and imprisoned in December 1793; he was released in 1794. He became notorious with his book, Th Age of Reason (1793-94), wh ich advocated de isman d too kiss ue with Ch ist ian doctri nes. While in France, he also wrote a pamphlet titled Agraria Justice (1795), which discussed the origins of property and introduced a concept that is simi lar to a gua ra nteed min im um in come. Paine remained in France during the early Napoleonic Era, but condemned Na poleon 's moves towa rds d ictatorsh ip, calling him "he completest cha rlata n that ever existed." Paine rema ined inFra nce unti 1802, when he returned to America on an invitation from Thomas Jefferso ,who had been elected president. Paine died at 59 Grove Street in Greenwich Village, New morning of June 8, 1809." (Quote fro ork City, on the

As a long and violent abuse of power, is generally the Means of cal ing the right of it in question (and in Matters too which might never ha e been thought of, had not the Sufferers been aggravated into the inquiry and as the King of England hath undertaken in his OWN RIGHT, to sup ort the Parliament in what he calls THEIRS, and as the good people of this ountry are grievously oppressed by the combination, they have an un oubted privilege to inquire into the pretensions of both, and equally to re ect the usu rpations of either. In the following sheets, the author hath studiously avoided eve thing which is personal among ourselves. Compliments as well as cen ure to individuals make no part thereof. The wise, and the worthy, need not the triumph of a pamphlet; and those whose sentiments are injudic ous, or unfriendly, will cease of themselves unless too much pains are b stowed upon their conversion. ORIGIN AND DESIGN OF GOVERNMENT IN L, WITH CONCISE REMARKS ON THE ENGLISH CONSTITUTION
OME riters have so confounded society with government, as to leave Ii tie or no distinction between them; whereas they are not only differe t, but have different origins. Society is produced by our wants, and g vernment by wickedness; the former promotes our happiness POSITIVELY y uniting our affections, the latter NEGATIVELY by restraining our vices. The one encourages intercourse, the other creates distinctions. The first is a atron, the last a pu n isher. Society in ev ry state is a blessing, but government even in its best state is but a neces ary evil; in its worst state an intolerable one; for when we suffer, or ar exposed to the same miseries BY A GOVERNMENT, which we might expe t in a country WITHOUT GOVERNMENT, our calamity is heightened y reflecting that we furnish the means by which we suffer. Government like dress, is the badge of lost innocence; the palaces of kings are built on he ruins of the bowers of paradise. For were the impulses of conscience lear, uniform, and irresistibly obeyed, man would need no other lawgi er; but that not being the case, he finds it necessary to surrender u a part of his property to furnish means for the protection of the rest; and this he is induced to do by the same prudence which in every other case a vises him out of two evils to choose the least. WH EREFORE, security bei g the true design and end of government, it unanswerably follows that hatever FORM thereof appears most likely to ensure it to us, with the leas expence and greatest benefit, is preferable to all others. In order to g let us suppo of the earth, peopling of society will thereto, the so unfitted f and relief of in a clear and just idea of the design and end of government, e a small number of persons settled in some sequestered part unconnected with the rest, they will then represent the first ny country, or of the world. In this state of natural liberty, e their first thought. A thousand motives will excite them tre ngth of one ma n is so u neq ua I to his wa nts, and his mi nd r perpetual solitude, that he is soon obliged to seek assistance nother, who in his turn requires the same. would be able to raise a tolerable dwelling in the midst of wilderness, but ONE man might labour out the common period of life wit out accomplishing any thing; when he had felled his timber he could n t remove it, nor erect it after it was removed; hunger in the mean time would urge him from his work, and eve ry different wa nt ca II him a differ nt way. Disease, nay even misfortune would be death, for though neither ight be mortal, yet either would disable him from living, and reduce him t a state in which he might rather be said to perish than to die. This necessity, like a gravitating power, would soon form emigrants into society, the reciprocal blessing of which, and render the obligations of law and government unnec remained perfectly just to each other; but as nothin impregnable to vice, it will unavoidably happen, that in p surmount the first difficulties of emigration, which bound a common cause, they will begin to relax in their duty a each other; and this remissness, will point out the necessi some form of government to supply the defect of moral vi Some convenient ur newly arrived ould supersede, ssary while they but heaven is oportion as they hem together in d attachment to y, of establishing ue.
of which, the whole colony may assemble to deliberate 0 public matters. It is more than probable that their first laws will have the title only of REGULATIONS, and be enforced by no other penalty than ublic disesteem. In this first parliament every man, by natural right, will hav a seat. But as the colony increases, the public concerns will incre se likewise, and the distance at which the members may be separated, ill render it too inconvenient for all of them to meet on every occasion as at first, when their number was small, their habitations near, and the pu lic concerns few and trifling. This will point out the convenience of their co senting to leave the legislative part to be managed by a select number hosen from the whole body, who are supposed to have the same concer s at stake which those have who appointed them, and who will act in the same manner as the whole body would act were they present. If the olony continues increasing, it will become necessary to augment the number of the representatives, and that the interest of every part of th colony may be attended to, it will be found best to divide the whole into onvenient parts, each part sending its proper number; and that the ELE ED might never form to themselves an interest separate from the ELECTO S, prudence will
