Dear Sir,

This letter serves to establish a commitment between Monsignor Charles Coen to serve as the
Master artist within the New York State Council on the Arts Apprenticeship program. The goal of this
project will be to share your knowledge of concertina with an apprentice, Mr. Douglas Barr of Staten
Island. The three of us recognize how important it is to pass down the traditional concertina music, style,
and indigenous repertoire of East Galway. In particular, according to Mr.Barr, you will the reason he
picked up the concertina for the first time.

This apprenticeship will be carried out through twelve lessons, once a month at your home in
Greenville at a fee of $300 per lesson. The schedule is flexible to meet your comfort needs. In addition,
all lessons will be recorded to aid Mr. Barr in review and study purposes. All material will also be used
for archival purposes in collaboration with the Council on the Arts & Humanities for Staten Island and the
Staten Island Museum & Archive. If granted, this apprenticeship will be hosted by the Council on the
Arts & Humanities for Staten Island, and facilitated by COAHSI’s Deputy Director and Director of
Folklife, Christopher Mulé.

Please sign below in the appropriate space provided. Thanks for you time and we sincerely look
forward to working with you. Please call me with any questions or concerns at the COAHSI office.

Sincerely,
