Q1. What is the problem as you see it?

Ans. Whole case revolve around supervisor-subordinate relationship. It seems that Mr. Mehta
is an autocrat who believes in delegating authority and doesn’t involved his subordinates in
decision making process. In result employees feel that they are not part of organization which
ultimately leads to conflicts. It also leads to less motivation of employee which results in less
productivity and decreased efficiency & effectiveness.

Q2. What do you think about Mehta’s description of the attitude survey as a “Popularity
contest”? Why do think he feels this way about it?

Ans. The survey was about ranking of department according to employee attitudes. In the same
survey Mr. Mehta’s department is at the bottom. From the report Mehta thinks that there is no
reality, facts behind it & it is biased completely. He feels that the result of the record is
influenced by some of the employees. The whole problem or complaint is for Mehta and not
against management.

Q3. How well do you think the attitude survey reflects Mehta’s handling of his subordinates
and why?

Ans. We can say that the reports of survey is not in favour of Mr. Mehta. Due to his nature he
is not able to deal properly with his subordinate. The statement given by Mehta’s “I can’t pin
medal to every pipe fitter for finishing his job and to get work done you have to follow them,
getting tired of check and check.

Q4. If you were the human resource manager how would you help Mehta to improve
employee relations in his department?

Ans. As a human resource manager I would suggest Mehta to organize activities which focused
on improving the relationship with his subordinate, involve them in decision making . I would
conduct training programmes like simulations for Mr. Mehta & managers like him, so that they
could understand the repercussion of their attitude & behaviour in the long run which could
adversely affect in attainment of organizational goal.

On the other side I will try to give counseling to Mr Mehta so that he could become more
human more sensitive towards his employees and give them little bit of space rather than
standing on their head.

Q5. Give an appropriate title for case.

Ans. “Animosity in subordinates”
