What Is Civil Engineering?
The branch of engineering concerned with the design and
construction of most public works is called Civil Engineering. You
may notice this as your parent drive on a bridge in the car that they
are steering. Civil Engineering is fun. Without it our bridges,
roads, canals, dams, and buildings simply wouldn’t be done.
One of the primary concerns of civil engineering is public safety
and health. It ensures that our lives are stable and filled with
wealth. There are many specialties within civil engineering, such
as structural, construction, environment, and transportation. When
you are involved with Civil Engineering there is no limitation.
Civil Engineering has been around longer than any other field. It is
so old it was even around before the invention of the wheel.

pg. 2
Many civil engineers manage people and projects. They enjoy their
Jobs at many different aspects. Civil engineers usually work in
areas where there is lots of manufacturing and businesses. This is a
very busy job, one that needs more than common since.
Most engineers work at least 40 hours per week. They work so
much that they rarely have time to sleep! Behind every major
public works is a team of civil engineers. They share with us their
structures while broadening our daily life with their careers

Civil Engineering with a “C” (The History of

Civil Engineering)
Civil Engineering has been an aspect of life since the beginnings
of human existence. Since when people moved around this land
with persistence. During the era of battles or operations, the
engineers were engaged to assist the soldiers fighting in the
pg. 3
battlefield by making catapults, towers, and other instruments.
From the past to this time forward Civil Engineering has expanded
in large increments.

The Great Wall of China that was constructed around 200 BC is

considered another achievement of ancient civil engineering in the
past. The engineers built it so well that even today you can see that
it will continue to last. Numerous technologies have assisted in the
advancement of civil engineering in the modern world. These
being so many events have unfurled.

Civil Engineering with a “C” (The History of
Civil Engineering) Continued…
Numerous technologies have assisted in the advancement of civil
engineering in the modern world, including high-tech machinery,
selection of materials, test equipment, and other sciences. Many off
these technologies Civil Engineers have adapted to use as every
day appliances
According to the historians, the Pyramids were constructed in
Egypt during 2800-2400 BC and may be considered as the first
large Civil Engineering structure construction ever. It proves that
even Civil Engineers in the past were also very clever.
In ancient history, most of the construction was carried out by
artisans, and technical expertise was limited. Today Civil
Engineers have access to all the tools they need so their tools may
keep up with modern changes and the things they have invented.

When Have You benefitted from Civil
Engineering?
When you get up in the morning and take a shower and
brush your teeth, the water comes from a water treatment plant
through a network of pipes, designed by civil engineers. The
dirty water leaves your house through a sewer and ends up at a
wastewater treatment plant designed by civil engineers where
it is treated and released to a nearby stream or river. When you
go to school or work, the roads you drive on and bridges you
might cross were designed by civil engineers.
The inlet drains along the curbs and gutters which carry
away rainfall were designed by civil engineers. The structure
or skeleton of the building you attend classes in or work in was
designed by a civil engineer, as well as its foundation. Even
the electricity you use was brought to you over transmission
lines, whose towers were designed by civil engineers. The
garbage you carried out to the trashcan is transported to a
sanitary landfill, which was designed by a civil engineer There
are many more such examples of how civil engineering is
involved in our daily lives

pg. 6
When Have You benefitted from Civil
Engineering? (Continued)
Civil engineering has a significant role in the life of every human
being, though one may not truly sense its importance in our daily
routine. The benefits of electricity we use are available to us through
the contribution of civil engineers who constructed the towers for the
transmission lines. In fact, no sphere of life may be identified that
does not include the contribution of civil engineering. Thus, the
importance of civil engineering may be determined according to its
usefulness in our day-to-day life.

Civil engineers can be said to provide the basis for the existence and
continued development of society. Furthermore, whereas some
bridges and high rise buildings may be extremely spectacular most of
the built environment is hardly noticed.
