bad and expensive.
Major legislation enacted includes Pollution (Public Law 87-88) which increases grants to states for
pollution control programs from $50 million annually to $570 million over @ 6-year period....-. Another
law (i. 87-72) is known as the “Tax Extender” and continues the 52% corporate tax rate and the exist-
ing schedule of excise taxes on alcoholic beverages, olc.: continues 10% tax on transportation of persons
and levy on local telephone calls.
The 87th Congress authorizes $11.5 billion for complotion of the 41,000 mile interstate highway
system ...... The same law (PL. 87-61) sels federal gas and diesel tax at 4 conts por gallon, raises
vies on tres, tubes, retread rubber. and on heavy trucks and buses; and transfers $150 million « year

Social Security: Makes certain “improvement” in OASI benefits: social security taxes to be increased

deceased worker would be increased from 75% of the worker's retirement benefit to 824% ...... The
insured-status requirement would be changed from one quarter of covered'work for each 3 calendar quarters
to one quarter for each 4 calendar quarters ....., The minimum benefit is increased from $33 to $40. . «

voluntary cut in acreage of feed grains by 20% to 40%: price support payment to participants for corm, grain
sorghums, other feed grains and soybeans at $1.20 from $1.96 a bushel....... The other agriculture measure
