Canine Vaccination Protocol

General Guidelines:
• All animals under 6 weeks old are NOT to be vaccinated
• Do NOT give rabies vaccine to dogs under 4 months old
• If not altered, withhold rabies certificate until after spay/neuter
• Always consult veterinarian prior to rabies vaccine administration

Patient with NO vaccine history


Age Vaccines Today Boosters
6-10 weeks DHPP only DHPP: 1 month later, 2 months later, 1 year later, then q 3 years
Rabies: at 4 months old, 1 year later, then q 3 years
11-15 weeks DHPP only DHPP: 1 month later, 1 year later, then q 3 years
Rabies: at 4 months old, 1 year later, then q 3 years
4-6 months DHPP DHPP: 1 month later, 1 year later, then q 3 years
Rabies** Rabies: 1 year later, then q 3 years
>6 months DHPP DHPP: 1 month later, 1 year later, then q 3 years
Rabies** Rabies: 1 year later, then q 3 years
**NOTE: Withhold rabies certificate if intact

Patient with a vaccine history

Rabies: at 4 months old, 1 year later, then q 3 years
4-6 months DHPP (4 weeks after last vaccination DHPP: 1 year later, then q 3 years
Rabies** (if not already given) Rabies: 1 year later, then q 3 years
>6 months DHPP (if not given within 3 years) DHPP: q 3 years
Rabies** (if not given within 3 years) Rabies: q 3 years
**NOTE: Withhold rabies certificate if intact

Locations of administration
• DHPP: left front limb SQ (intra-scapular area)
• Rabies: right rear limb SQ (distal thigh)
• Bordetella: intranasal ONLY (not routinely ad-
ministered)
