Exercise -1, Problem No.2

• Average response time = 3 days Throughput time

• Processing time = 60 min.
– Testing: 30 min. Work Content
– Moving: 10 min.
– Checking: 20 min.

• Throughput efficiency = (work content) /(Throughput time)

= 60 / (3 x 7 x 60 ) = 4.7%
[assumption: 7 working hours per day, or 24 hours per day is also acceptable]

• Value-added throughput efficiency = (value-added work content)

/(Throughput time)
= (30+20) / (3 x 7 x 60 ) = 3.9%
[assumption: testing and checking are value-added]

• Value-added throughput efficiency after the rearrangement

= (30+10) / (3 x 7 x 60 ) = 3.17%

Exercise -1 , Problem No.4

• Number of applications = 1600 per week Output

• Time available to process the applications
= 40 hours per week Over a period of 40 hours

• Cycle time = (Time required to produce the output)/Output

= (40 x 60) / 1600 = 1.5 min.

Note:
1. Cycle time = average time between units of output emerging
from a process.
2. Pay attention to “unit of measurement”, preferring minutes.

Exercise -1 , Problem No.5

• Number of applications = 1600 per week Output

• Time available to process the applications
= 40 hours per week Over a period of 40 hours
• The work content = 30 min.

[Work Content ] / [Number of Staff] = Cycle time

• Cycle time = (Time required to produce the output)/Output

= (40 x 60) / 1600 = 1.5 min.

• Number of staff = (Work Content)/Cycle Time

= 30 / 1.5 = 20

Exercise -1, Problem No.6

• Number of applications = 1600 per week Output

• Time available to process the applications
= 40 hours per week Over a period of 40 hours
• The work content = 30 min.
• The total working hours = 7.5 hr, or 450 min.
Throughput time

Throughput time (TH) = Work in process (WIP) × Cycle time (CT)

• Cycle time = (Time required to produce the output)/Output

= (40 x 60) / 1600 = 1.5 min.

• WIP = (Throughput time) / (Cycle time)

= (450) / 1.5 = 300
