RED CRESCENT FIRST AID TIPS

When an adult chokes

Determine if the victim is able to speak

1 or cough. Ask him if he is choking. The
victim may be using the "universal
distress signal" of choking: clutching the neck
between the thumb and forefinger.

2 Ask the victim to bend forward so that

his head is lower than his chest.

If the victim cannot cough out the

3 object blocking his windpipe, give him

four sharp slaps between the shoulder
blades with the heel of your hand. Repeat if
necessary.

If the person is still not able to breathe,

4 stand behind him and perform the
Heimlich manouver: Interlock and
clench your fists just below the victim's ribcage.
Pull your clenched fists suddenly inward and
upward. Repeat if necessary. The object should
be released into the mouth.

Note: For victims who are in an advanced state

of pregnancy or who are obese, perform chest
compressions to dislodge the obstruction. Stand
behind the victim and place your arms under the
victim's armpits to encircle the chest. Press with
quick backward thrusts.
