A web service can be defined as an application or a software system (technical term) that can
communicate with other applications over a network using a set of standardized XML protocols.

Web Services is an evolving technology, which facilitates businesses to integrate their processes
and exchange information across and beyond their organization.

The biggest challenge faced by any business is to synchronize all generations of applications
that have been built in the past and make them act as individual solutions. It can be very costly.
Using Web services, this expense can be lessened. It allows an organization to easily integrate
all its applications and enable effective communication across different system components,
including operating systems.

Using Web services, business systems can access and communicate information from multiple
applications. This enables business-technology systems to rapidly initiate and deploy new
business processes.

Though the major advantages of web services are integration and distribution, but there are
certain additional benefits too which haven’t been considered by the businesses yet. Benefits
include integration of customers and suppliers. Earlier this was considered as a heavy
investment, however with the web services, this integration can be done easily at a relatively
lower cost.1
