APOPO trains African giant pouched rats (Cricetomys gambianus) to utilize their exceptional sense of smell in humanitarian detection efforts. It takes nine months to fully train a ‘HeroRAT’ and they can live up to eight years.
These intelligent rats are socialized from a young age, and then taught to detect a particular scent through a combination of click training and food rewarding. APOPO currently trains rats for landmine detection or tuberculosis screening.
