SIAM data shows that the 11 month sales of commercial vehicles is slightly better than in
the previous year but much lower than the year before and that Tata Engineering has
gained market share (from 63% to 68%) at the cost of Ashok Leyland.
LCV sales continue to move down with the exception of Swaraj and Eicher. Tata Engineering
remains the biggest player with a 54% market share.
Passenger car sales are probably ahead of last year if the unreported Daewoo sales are
added but well below sales of the year before. Maruti have recovered with market share
moving up to 59,5% from 57.8% the previous year. Hyundai is firmly in 2nd place with
15.5% and well ahead of Tata Engineering who have regained market share with 11%. Fiat
who have moved to 4rd place with 3.4% but Fiat's March share, driven by the Palio, is
5.6%. (Hyundai has a 39% share of India's cars excluding Maruti.)
MUV sales would have been ahead of the previous year but for the slowdown at Toyota over
the past two months. M&M remain the leader with a 47% market share. Tata Engineering
has suffered the worst loss of market share.
