Chapter 1
Product Description

Advanced Document Transformation Services is server software that generates copies of documents
in Portable Document Format (PDF), PDF text, and HyperText Markup Language (HTML). You can
use Documentum client applications to request such a copy (called a rendition) of a document stored
in a Documentum repository. The transformation capabilities of Advanced Document Transformation
Services include PDF assembly, header/footer creation, security, textual watermarking, and content
overlays.
Advanced Document Transformation Services can also provide PDF transformations from other
file formats such as image and email formats.
Some Documentum client applications do not provide access to PDF and HTML renditions; consult
the documentation for the client you are using.

New Features and Changes
New features for version 6 SP1
There are no new features for version 6 Service Pack 1.

New features for version 6

EMC Documentum Advanced Document Transformation Services version 6 includes
a variety of new features and improvements. This section describes the major
enhancements that are available through Digital Asset Manager (DAM). Refer to the
product documentation for complete information about these features.

CTS reporting tool

The CTS reporting tool provides detailed information about transformation type, volume
and error events. Data such as CTS product performance, plug-in usage, and requests
by users assists in monitoring and analyzing transformation usage and can assist with
load balancing strategies. Reporting can be logged for a configurable time frame and
then rolled over to be archived. The resulting information is retained in the repository
and is viewable through DAM.

Transformation request queue management

The queue management feature provides a mechanism for monitoring and
administrating transformation request queues. This feature allows users to view or
delete their own pending transformation requests. Administrators can manage the
queues for all users and change the priority of transformation requests when required.
Administrators can manage the queue by deleting items or changing the priority
of items. Users can view their own transformation requests and delete their own
transformation requests, but cannot change a queue item priority.

EMC Documentum Advanced Document Transformation Services Version 6 SP1 Release Notes 13
New Features and Changes

Prole editor
The profile editor assists with editing or building profiles. New or existing profiles
can be customized by editing default values and adding or removing formats. Users
can select multiple profiles for easy chaining and sequencing to automate a series of
transformations, rather than selecting each transformation separately. Both user and
system profiles can be handled with the profile editor. You can also add or remove
profiles to and from the original selection, rearrange the order of profiles, change
parameter default values, as well as edit, add and remove source target formats to
configure the desired behavior for a profile.

Prole migration
Content Transformation Services migrates existing predefined and custom profiles with
minimal modification, from version 5.3 Content Transformation Services products
onwards up to version 6 SP1, for backward compatibility. For further information see
Migrating existing profiles, page 38.

Known Problems and Limitations

This section identifies problems and limitations that may affect your use of the product.
Note: This section and Chapter 6, Technical Notes may refer to platforms or features that are not
supported for this release of your product. Check Chapter 4, Environment and System Requirements
to verify requirements.
EMC Documentum posts the latest information about customer-reported issues and known problems
on the Powerlink site (http://powerlink.emc.com). You must have a software support agreement
to log in and access the list of issues.

Known problems
This section describes known problems regarding the usability of current functionality.

Change user fails with an invalid response from the

agent (150364)
Changing the main user, with a valid name and password, results in the following error:
“An invalid response was received from the agent”. The workaround is to change the
password through Digital Asset Manager or change the user through the CTS server.

EMC Documentum Advanced Document Transformation Services Version 6 SP1 Release Notes 23
Known Problems and Limitations

Cannot congure a CTS instance as cong les are not

read (150193)
User is unable to configure a CTS instance and set configuration parameters with values
from the CTSServerService.xml file. All fields are blank or default to the first option in
the list. The workaround is to configure the parameters directly on the CTS server.

Option to view log les is not available (150185)

User is unable to retrieve a log file of a CTS product after selecting the log file for
viewing. The workaround is to access the log files from the CTS server.

CTS fails to start when congured against the global

registry (150077)
CTS fails to start successfully when configured against a global registry and results in the
following error in the CTS_log.txt for all profiles:
com.documentum.cts.exceptions.internal.CTSProfileServiceException:
[DM_VEL_INSTANTIATION_ERROR]error: "Cannot instantiate Java class"
Cause Exception was: Exception during updating profile cache pdf_processing
The workaround is to manually run the Transformation and Rich_Media_Services
docapps against the global registry after configuring the CTS product.

ProleSchema.dtd is not checked out to the proper

location (149930)
When checking out a transformation profile, the ProfileSchema.dtd file is not checked
out to the correct location. The user can locate the file in the same location as the profile
is checked out to.

Server name cannot exceed 15 bytes (145219)

An error message will display during installing when trying to enter a host name that is
longer then 15 bytes. This a Microsoft limitation. The workaround is to shorten the name
to be less then 15 bytes.

24 EMC Documentum Advanced Document Transformation Services Version 6 SP1 Release Notes
Known Problems and Limitations

Commented lines in cong les are removed when a

CTS Congurator is run (106390)
Commented lines in configuration files are removed when a CTS configurator is run.
For example, you have installed Media Transformation Services and then commented
out the pdfstoryboard MP in the CTSPluginService.xml config file. If you then install
another CTS product (such as ADTS or DTS), the line for the pdfstoryboard plug-in is
completely removed from the CTSPluginService.xml file.

Conguration by SuperUser will fail if user_os_name is

blank (112591)
If a SuperUser created in Documentum Administrator does not have a user_os_name
defined in the dm_user table, configuration of any Content Transformation Services
product will fail.
The user_os_name must be assigned in order for the SuperUser to have SuperUser
privileges. Alternatively, using the user_login_name field will result in successful
configuration.

Generated TOC may be rotated after merging PDF

documents (119956)
After performing a Merge PDF transformation, a Table of Contents (TOC) is generated
for the merged output. However, the TOC may be rotated by 90° clockwise.
This problem is caused by a third-party plug-in limitation.

CTS Admin Agent prevents CTS_log.txt from archiving

(127418)
If the CTS Admin Agent is running, the CTS_log.txt file does not archive properly
after each day. This results in one continuous CTS_log.txt file, making it difficult to
troubleshoot errors.

EMC Documentum Advanced Document Transformation Services Version 6 SP1 Release Notes 25
Known Problems and Limitations

Limitations
This section describes limits on the usability of current functionality. The limitations
may be part of the product design or may result from issues with associated third-party
products.

Transform to HTML for virtual documents creates HTML

without children (93890)
The HTML document created for a virtual document transformation does not contain
the child documents.
A zipped HTML will be created for an OLE linked document file, not for the related
documents.

Transform to HTML for some formats creates rendition

with system dened le name (95066)
When creating an HTML rendition for some files (such as Word or PowerPoint formats)
that contain accented characters in the file name, the system will generate a file name that
starts with CTS and ends with a generated number (for example, CTS1645438670_files).
Advanced Document Transformation Services uses some third party applications to
transform documents that are unable to process accented characters.

ADTS cannot handle 3D CAD les (118418)

All transformations fail with 3D CAD files. These errors are not seen with 2D CAD
drawings. This is a limitation of a third-party plug-in.

File names containing double-byte characters are

corrupted with Add Attachment transformation (126227)
After performing an Add Attachment transformation, file names with double-byte
characters are corrupted. The file name changes to <CTS######>.

26 EMC Documentum Advanced Document Transformation Services Version 6 SP1 Release Notes
Known Problems and Limitations

This problem is caused by a third-party plug-in limitation.

Double-byte characters are corrupted after MIME to

PDF transformation (126232)
The subject and attachment names of EML and MSG source files in Japanese, Korean,
and Simplified Chinese are corrupted after a MIME to PDF transformation. This occurs
on English operating systems. However, Japanese and Korean source files are not
corrupted when using Japanese and Korean operating systems, respectively.
There is a workaround available for English operating systems:
• Follow the procedures in the Content Transformation Services Language Pack Installation
and Release Notes for enabling multilingual support in Advanced Document
Transformation Services.
• Save the message in Arial Unicode MS format before transforming the file.

Double-byte characters are corrupted after Extract

MIME transformation (126236, 126992)
EML and MSG source files in Japanese, Korean, and Simplified Chinese are corrupted
after an Extract MIME transformation on English operating systems. Content, subject,
and attachment names are corrupted.
• Save the message in Unicode format before transforming the file.

configured against. The Transformation docapp should be downloaded from
https://EMC.subscribenet.com/control/dctm/index.

Conguring prole label localization

The user has the option to turn the profile label localization on or off in the listing.

To congure prole label localization to ON or OFF:

1. Go to R:\WDKApps\Main\app\dam\config\library\profiles\dam_myprofiles_
component.xml.
2. Select True (to turn the option on) or False (to turn the option off).

If Ofce to PDF transformation fails

If a Microsoft Office file type (such as Word) to PDF transformation fails, check that the
user account for Content Transformation Services also has the required privileges to start
the Microsoft Office application. If the Content Transformation Services user account
does not have privileges to start Microsoft Word, the transformation process fails.
Also, ensure that after installing Microsoft Office, you start it for the first time and
complete the registration prompt. If this is not completed, a registration prompt
appears, preventing Advanced Document Transformation Services from completing any
transformation requests.

Checking the version of a CTS product installer

The following procedure allows you to check the version of a CTS installer (in this case,
the Advanced Document Transformation Services installer).
Navigate to the directory where the installer exists. Open a command prompt window.
Run the following command, using the full path to the Java executable on the machine,
if it is not defined as a system variable:

30 EMC Documentum Advanced Document Transformation Services Version 6 SP1 Release Notes
Technical Notes

java -cp <installer_jar_file> DiShowVersion

For example, the full command for ADTS is: java -cp adtsWinSuiteSetup.jar
DiShowVersion.
This displays the full installer version.

Restart CTS service if proles are modied

The CTS Service must be restarted if any system profiles are modified. After modifying
a system profile (such as register), CTS must be restarted because the system profiles
are cached during CTS startup.
Services are restarted using the Windows Services utility, found at Start > Settings >
Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services. Consult the Advanced Document
Transformation Services Administration Guide for details.

Manual re-conguration of ADTS instance if

the repository is deleted
If a repository configured with Advanced Document Transformation Services is
permanently unavailable, some manual re-configuration is necessary. For example,
if the repository cannot be recovered after a crash, or if the repository is deleted
without removing all instances of Advanced Document Transformation Services, this
procedure is recommended. Without manual re-configuration, the Advanced Document
Transformation Services fails to start for all repositories that the ADTS server was
configured against, not just the deleted repository. You will see the following error in
the CTS_log.txt file:
11:28:08,406 INFO [ main] CTSServerHandlerImpl - ***************

To fix this, perform the following procedure on the Advanced Document Transformation

Services host:

1. Navigate to %CTS%\config (for example, C:\Program

Files\Documentum\CTS\config).
2. Make a backup copy of the following files:
• CTSProfileService.xml
• CTSServerService.xml
• SessionService.xml
3. In any text or XML editor, open the CTSProfileService.xml file and remove the entire
<ProfileManagerContext> tag for the repository that is no longer available.
4. In any text or XML editor, open the CTSServerService.xml file and remove the entire
<QueueProcessorContext> tags for the repository that is no longer available. There
are two of these tags for each repository that has been configured, so you will need
to remove both entries for the repository that is no longer available.
5. In any text or XML editor, open the SessionService.xml file and remove the entire
<LoginContext> tag for the repository that is no longer available.
6. Delete the folder for the repository that is no longer available under
%CTS%\docbases (for example, C:\Program Files\Documentum\CTS\docbases).
7. Open the Windows Registry Editor (go to Start > Run > regedit).
8. For Advanced Document Transformation Services and all other Content
Transformation Services products installed, delete the folder with the repository
name that is no longer available under:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Documentum\CTS\<cts_product>\Docbases

For example, the full path for ADTS, including the repository name, will appear as:

32 EMC Documentum Advanced Document Transformation Services Version 6 SP1 Release Notes
Technical Notes

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Documentum\CTS\ADTS\Docbases\<repository>

9. Stop the CTS service.

10. Delete the CTS log files.
11. Start the CTS service.

Incorrect error message is displayed when

using the wrong version of a rendering
application
When the wrong version of a rendering application is installed, the transformation
request will fail and the user is notified. For example, if the source document is in Word
2003 but Word 2000 is installed on the server, the log file should report the correct reason
for the transformation failure. Instead, the log file reports this type of error message:
11:00:29,398 INFO [ Thread-17] AdvancedPDFProcessor -
Result for job: 82ed4941-1cfc-481a-8ca4-339500b61d78\1197460 :
<?xml version=”http://adlibsys.com/webservices”>
Detail log file doesn't exist.</string>

If you receive this type of message, compare the version of the rendering application to
the version for the source document. Install the corresponding version of the rendering
application to ensure successful transformations.

Rendition failures due to expired login tickets

In some cases, users may experience rendition failures resulting from expired login
tickets. The following error message appears in the log file:
[DM_SESSION_E_START_FAIL]
[DM_SESSION_E_LDAP_AUTHENTICATION_FAILED]
[DM_SESSION_E_LDAP_BIND]

This error was observed in prior versions of Advanced Document Transformation

Services, but has been resolved for version 5.3 SP2. A KeepSessionTimeOut node has
been added to the SessionService.xml file, to prevent the caching of login tickets.
However, if a system administrator changes the KeepSessionTimeOut node from its
default of 0, this error may occur. Ensure that the value for the KeepSessionTimeOut
node is less than the ticketed session expiry timeout value in the server.ini file for a given
repository.

Conguring ADTS to interact with Documentum

Compliance Manager objects in a repository
If Advanced Document Transformation Server is configured against a server that
has Documentum Compliance Manager (DCM) installed, certain JAR files and
dbor.properties must be copied to the ADTS host. Otherwise, these errors may occur:
• An exception is thrown, which causes the Advanced Document Transformation
Server to stop.
• Renditions requested through DCM fail.
• An error appears in the DCM log file (log4j.log).

To enable ADTS to interact with DCM objects in a repository:

1. Copy the dcm.jar and dcmIModule.jar files (at C:\Program
Files\Documentum\Shared) from the DCM host to the repository on
the ADTS host. Copy the files to this location: /System/Applications/dcm/dmc_dcm_
controlled_doc_aspect.
2. Update the classpath for the ADTS service to include dcm.jar and dcmIModule.jar.
For example, the registry would include the following when the classpath is updated
for dcm.jar:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\DocumentumCTS\
Parameters]
"AppParameters"="-Xbootclasspath:C:\\PROGRA~1\\DOCUME~1\\java\\1.4.2_04\
\jre\\lib\\rt.jar -Xms64m -Xmx256m -Djava.protocol.handler.pkgs=
sun.net.www.protocol -XJVMDir:
C:\\PROGRA~1\\DOCUME~1\\java\\1.4.2_04\\jre\\bin\\server\\
jvm.dll -DCTS_CONFIG_DIR=C:\\PROGRA~1\\DOCUME~1\\CTS\\config
-Dlog4j.configuration=file:C:\\Documentum\\config\\log4j.properties
-DOUTPUT_DIR=C:\\PROGRA~1\\DOCUME~1\\CTS\\logs -DOUTPUT_TEST_FILES=true
-DCLEAN_TEST_FILES=false -DMAX_WAIT_INTERVALS=5
-Djava.class.path=C:\\PROGRA~1\\DOCUME~1\\CTS\\lib\\cts.jar;
C:\\PROGRA~1\\DOCUME~1\\dctm.jar;
C:\\Program Files\\Documentum\\Shared\\dcm.jar;
C:\\Documentum\\config;
C:\\PROGRA~1\\DOCUME~1\\CTS\\lib -mainclass=com/documentum/bfc/services/
mediaserver/MediaServerStartup -servicename=DocumentumCTS
-displayname=Documentum Content Transformation Services
-wrkdir=C:\\PROGRA~1\\DOCUME~1\\CTS\\lib"

3. Copy the DCM entries from the dbor.properties file on the DCM application server
(or Content Server that has DCM repository running), and append them to the
dbor.properties file on the ADTS host.
After this procedure is completed, the Advanced Document Transformation Server can
create renditions through DCM.

Documentation corrections and clarications

This section lists additions to the Advanced Document Transformation Services
Administration Guide (version 6).

Migrating existing proles

Content Transformation Services migrates existing predefined and custom profiles with
minimal modification, from version 5.3 Content Transformation Services products
onwards up to version 6 SP1, for backward compatibility.
Content Transformation Services performs the following functions during the installation
process:
• Creates a report summary regarding the changes that are going to happen before the
actual migration process starts. The summary report is logged just before the profile
migration tool runs and displays the results.
• Migrates the command line files, profiles, and system profiles to comply with version
6 or 6 SP1.
Note:
— Legacy profiles that were created using versions of Content Transformation
Services products prior to version 5.3 may experience problems during
migration. In such cases, the profile migration tool migrates the information that
it can and ignores any additional information. If all of the plug-in entries used
in a custom profile are no longer in use, and cannot be updated, the profile
will be deleted.
— Profile names that existed before migration are preserved; however, if multiple
instances of the same profile name exist, the profiles are renamed unless
overridden by command line options. If a profile is renamed in the current
version, Content Transformation Services will update the existing profile name.
— If the original name of the profile is too long to be appended, it is shortened
as necessary.
