The Life of John
1. John was one of the first disciples called
• There was a cost attached (Matthew 4:8-22)

2. John had a unique perspective on the life and ministry of Jesus

• John was probably the youngest disciple
o About 16-20 years old when he first started following Jesus
o God wants to use you NOW, not later
• Peter, James and John known as pillars of the early church, and experienced events no
other disciples got to witness
o The Mount of Transfiguration (Mark 9:2-9)
o Raising the girl from the dead (Luke 8:51-55)
o The Garden of Gethsemane (Mark 14:33-35)
o The Crucifixion itself (John 19:26-27)

3. John was one of the primary writers of the New Testament

• The Gospel of John; 1st, 2nd, & 3rd John

Themes
1. Jesus is God
• Jesus is the Creator (John 1, Hebrews 1:2-3)
• Really, the reason Jesus was crucified was because of his claim to be God
• If you want to know if someone is a false teacher, most times you can tell by looking at
what they say about who Jesus is

Heresies about who Jesus is:

Modalism: One God, appears 3 different ways
Arianism: Three persons, but only the Father is God
§ Now evident in Jehovah’s Witnesses
Mormonism: Jesus & Satan are brothers
Islam: Jesus was a great prophet, but not God

2. Jesus became a man

• Jesus was born (Matthew 2:1)
• Jesus got tired (John 4:6)
• Jesus slept (Matthew 8:24)
• Jesus wept (John 11:35)
• Jesus got hungry & thirsty (Matthew 4:2, John 19:28)
• His wisdom was limited (Luke 2:40)
• Jesus felt stress (Luke 22:44)
• Jesus died (John 19:34)

3. Jesus was rejected by the world he created

• John 1:9-11

4. Jesus came to accomplish a mission

• He came so that anyone who believed in him would be saved (John 1:9-11, 3:16)
• He came to bridge the gap between us & God

1. Rejoice in your salvation

2. Serve people like crazy

• John 3:25-30
• Who are you following?

3. If you haven’t received Christ, then receive Christ
