Tanggal: 2011-05-24

30 volunteers of Peace Corps (USA) come to University of Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) to join Bahasa Indonesia
training for 10 weeks. This is the second opportunity for PC to cooperate with UMM after the successful of the same
program last year (2010). According to Betsy Vegso, the Director of Programming and Training PC in Indonesia, during
the 10 weeks training, the 30 volunteers will be put in 30 houses in Batu regency. So, they will live together with
Indonesian family. This is one of strategies to encourage the volunteers to learn about Bahasa Indonesia and cultures.

The Assistant Rector for International Relations UMM, Drs. Soeparto, M.Pd, added that there was no additional facilities
given to the volunteers during their stay in Batu. They will live just like how the local people do: food, bathe, sleep, and
others. After the training period is over, the 30 volunteers later will start their two years services in East Java high
schools.

The presence of the volunteers in UMM was officially welcomed by The First Vice Rector UMM, Prof. Dr. Ir. Sujono,
M.Kes. He said that UMM would provide the best services to accommodate the volunteers in UMM, so they could study
Bahasa Indonesia and local cultures successfully. Finally, welcome Peace Corps volunteers, and enjoy your stay in
UMM - Malang. (iro)
