Reading (1 hour ~ 3 parts)
Remember, you have 20 minutes for each reading task
First, skim read the text (1-2 minutes)
‘Second, read the questions. Underline key words: it will help you remember the words
Third, read the text again but only for those words you underlined/synonyms. You are only
answering the question
5 Fill in the answer sheet as you go along. It must be completed before the 1 hour is up.
6 Check your spelling. If your handwriting is bad, write in CAPITAL LETTERS.

Listening (40 mins ~ three parts)
1 Have a good night's sleep. The test is usually early morning
2 While you are waiting, read/underline key words and guess any gaps
3 Remember, you have ten minutes at the end of the listening to transfer your answers to the answer
sheet. Do not change your answers.
4 If your handwriting is bad, write in CAPITAL LETTERS.
5 Remember to check your spelling
Writing (1 hour— 2 parts)
1 Read the question carefully. Underline key parts of the question to ensure you answer all parts
2 Try notto repeat words from the question. Think of synonyms if possible
3 _Inppart 1, remember to state what the subject is clearly inthe first line: | am writing to complain
4 There could be letters of complainvlenquiry/requestiadvice
5 Remember Dear Sir/Yours faithfully Dear Mr Smith/Yours sincerely
6 —_Inpart 2, spend 10 minutes planning
7 Keep your introduction (repeat question/ask question/state opinion) and conclusion short.
8 Make sure you use paragraphs
8 —_ Paragraph structure: opinion/concession/emphasise opinion/personal example
10 Spend the last 5 minutes checking spelling and grammar.
11 Make sure your argument is clear. Do not change your mind half way through.
12 Make sure you write at least 150 words and at least 250 words in parts 1 and 2 respectively
‘Speaking (11-14 minutes ~ 3 parts)
1 Try to relax. You will speak much better if you think the examiner is your friend,
2 In part 1, try to use as much grammar as you can e.g. I've been living in Kyiv since 2000, although |
used to live in Lviv.
3 ‘Try to.use idiomatic expressions
4 In part 2, take the minute to plan your talk. Logic is important. Use linking words like first, then,
next, to sum up
5 In part 3, as in all other parts, give your own opinion. Show the examiner you have opinions and
personality. It makes it much more interesting for him/her.
Do not despair if you get 6.5 when the university asked for 7. There are many other factors universities take
into consideration other than your IELTS score.
