Warasinee Apirakdacharchai ID 5080048 DataCom HW3 1. What is a relationship between period and frequency?

Period is a function of voltage versus time. It shows an interval where the wave repeat itself(pattern). On the other hand, frequency shows how many times a function attains in 1 second. We can say that frequency and period are the inverse of each other. 2. What does the amplitude of a signal measure? What does the frequency of a signal measure? What does the phase of a signal measure? Amplitude of a signal measures the maximum deviation in magnitude from mean position. Frequency of signal measures the number of cycle(period) in 1 second. Phase of signal measures the different of the position of the waveform relative to time 0 3. How can a composite signal be decomposed into its individual frequencies? Fourier analysis, by using frequency-domain graphs. If the composite signal is periodic, the decomposition gives the result with discrete frequencies. If the composite signal is non-periodic, the decomposition gives the result with continuous frequencies. 4. Name three types of transmission impairment. Attenuation loss of energy Distortion signal changes its form or shape Noise receive unwanted signal 5. Distinguish between baseband transmission and broadband transmission. In a baseband transmission, the entire bandwidth of the cable is consumed by a single signal. In broadband transmission, signals are sent on multiple frequencies, allowing multiple signals to be sent simultaneously. 6. Distinguish between a low-pass channel and band-pass channel. A low-pass channel has bandwidth with frequency between 0 and infinity where band-pass channel has bandwidth with frequency between f1 and f2 7. What does the Nyquist theorem have to do with communications? Nyquist theorem is one of the deciding factor in data communication. It tells us how many signal levels we need. 8. What does the Shannon capacity have to do with communications? Shannon capacity tells us the highest data rate or the capacity of a channel irrespective of the physical materials of the channel or media. For example copper wire is create less noise. 9. Why do optical signals used in fiber optic cables have a very short wave length? For this question, I do not know the answer. What I do know now is that fiber optic cables transmit signal as a pulse of light. It used for short distance because it create noise. It core made out of glass or in some case plastic. Plastic optic fiber has shorter wavelength because

it made from a material that has lower absorption. I think the answer is the same if we compare fiber optic cable with copper wire. Fiber optic cable that made out of glass with have shorter wavelength. 10. Can we say if a signals is periodic or non periodic by just looking its frequency domain plot? How? Yes, the frequency in the frequency domain plot in periodic will give result of discrete value, where non periodic will give result of infinity. 11. Is the frequency domain plot of a voice signal discrete or continuous? This is depend if the voice in this case means talking normally, it will be continuous. However, if the voice is one word repeating itself, it will be discrete. 12. Is the frequency domain plot of an alarm discrete or continuous? The answer is almost the same with previous question. It is mostly discrete. If the alarm tone is just a beep or a ring the repeat it self, it will be discrete. However, if we set the alarm tone as a song (in mobile phone) it will be continuos. 13. We send a voice signal from a microphone to a recorder. Is this baseband or broadband transmission? It is broadband transmission because we send analog signal into the microphone. 14. We send a digital signal from one station on LAN to another station. Is this baseband or broadband transmission? It is a baseband transmission because we send digital signal through the LAN 15. We modulate several voice signals and send them though the air. Is this baseband or broadband transmission? It is a broadband transmission because we send multiple frequencies. In broadband transmission, it allows multiple signals to be sent simultaneously.
