Evil
Good vs. evil is basically the novels biggest theme. More specifically, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is easily viewed as an allegory about the good and evil that exist in all men, and about our struggle with these two sides of the human personality. In this book, then, the battle between good and evil rages within the individual. The question is which is superior. Since Hyde seems to be taking over, one could argue that evil is stronger than good. However, Hyde does end up dead at the end of the story, perhaps suggesting a weakness or failure of evil. The big question, of course, is whether or not good can be separated from evil, or whether the two are forever intertwined.
irreparable rift in their relationship, especially after Dr. Lanyon witnesses Dr. Jekylls transformation with his own eyes.
Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Theme of Lies and Deceit
In Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the plot is frequently driven forward by secrecy and deception; Mr. Utterson doesnt know the relationship between Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, and he wants to find out. Also, by omitting the scenes of Mr. Hydes supposedly crazy debauchery, Stevenson allows our imaginations to run to wild and eerie places.
Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde Theme of Women and Femininity
Most female characters in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde are passive and weak. The first female we see is a young girl mowed over by Mr. Hyde. Although she is "not much the worse, more frightened," she still kicks up an incredible fuss and a large group of people come to her aid. The next woman we see is via a maids narrative of the Carew murder. After witnessing the murder, she faints, awakening long after the murderer is gone. She is a passive spectator. There is much speculation as to the reasons for the absence of females in the story; one particularly compelling argument is that women function as moral bedrocks in most Victorian novels. Theyre supposed to be beacons of good moral influence. In Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde therefore, women may have unnecessarily complicated the story.
Moral values are the lessons that the reader learns after reading the story. The moral values in the novel are: i. Good will overcome evil and all bad things will come to a n end. - No matter what bad things happened and how it happened, in the end of the story everything turn up settled. Bad things that happened eventually come to an end. ii. Man must control his desires or else it will be disastrous. We must be responsibl e for our actions. - Dr.Jekyll was not responsible for his evil acts. He created another image and used him to commit his cruel and evil acts. As a doctor, his duty is to save lives but instead he created Hyde to do the things he could not do as a respect ed doctor. iii. The value of friendship and loyalty. Friends stay with each other in times of trouble or uncertainties. - Dr Jekyll s good friends, Mr Utterson and Dr Lanyon cared very much for him. It was Dr Jekyll who did not appreciate their friendship and secretly indulged in unlawful experiments to satisfy hi fancies. However, Dr Lanyon followed his instructions and watched Hyde transform. What he saw eventually killed him. iv. We must think rationally when we make decisions - Dr Jekyll believed that there are two sides to a person s character- the good and the bad. He attempts to follow his heart so that he can enjoy his evil doing s desire to separate the good and evil parts in man s without being caught. But his experiment was only
successful for a short while and it brought him discontentment and unhappiness.
