Yogas described in Jyotish Shyama Sangraha-Part 5

Yenbeeyes Edited by: Sri C.S.Chandrashekar (Published in Astrovision E Journal Vol. 4 Issue No 43 of July 2011) We have so far seen forty Yogas described in the collection Jyotish Shyama Sangraha. Henceforth, I shall be taking up the various Raja Yogas as described in the book. Raja Yoga as the name itself suggests has something Royal in it. Yoga means union as we all know and in Astrology we take into consideration association of planets and the houses they rule. We also take into account the aspect of the planets while deciding upon the Yoga. Lastly, we consider the Parivartana or the exchange of planets also. Raja Yoga is said to exist when there is an association between a Kendra house (1, 4, 7, 10) and a Trikona (1, 5, 9) house (Planets placed therein/ Lords of these houses are all included when we say association). It is said that Kendras are places of Lord Vishnu and Trikonas are the places of Goddess Lakshmi. So when these two associate themselves, naturally a royal or kingly flavor is formed. With this background let us go through the various combinations forming Raja Yoga or Raja Sambandha Yoga as described by Pandit Sri Shyamlal. Verse 1

Meaning: Taurus Lagna with Moon in it and six planets placed in their exaltation position native will be a King. If all the planets are in their own house (swakshetra) he will be equal to a King. Comment from Editor CSS: I think this means that when all grahas occupy either their exaltation house or own house or are conjunct grahas in own or exaltation house the jataka becomes equal to a king. Note: The exaltation position of the seven planets are as follows: Sun Aries; Moon Taurus; Mars Capricorn; Mercury Virgo; Jupiter Cancer; Venus Pisces and Saturn Libra. One important point to remember here is that Mercury cannot be away from the Sun by more than 36 degrees and Venus 48 degrees (Approx). Hence Mercury has to be excluded for the above verse as it is exalted in 15 degree Virgo and it will be far away from Sun which gets its exaltation in Aries 10 degrees. So we are left with only 6 planets including Moon. It is not clear whether the author when he says 6 planets in its exaltation position is it inclusive of Moon or exclusive. It must be inclusive only as then only we will get 6 planets in their exaltation position. Rahu and Ketu have not been considered due to the differing opinion on their strengths. Swakshetra Positions are as follows: Sun Leo; Moon cancer; Mars Aries/Scorpio; Mercury Gemini/Virgo; Jupiter Sagittarius/Pisces; Venus Taurus/Libra; Saturn Capricorn/aquarius. 1

Yenbeeyes Edited by: Sri C.S.Chandrashekar (Published in Astrovision E Journal Vol. 4 Issue No 43 of July 2011) If Sun is to be in Leo then it has to be beyond 12 degrees and then only Venus can be placed in Libra. In such a situation Mercury has to be in Virgo. Moon is to be taken in Taurus as per first line og the verse. Other planets viz. Mars, Jupiter and Saturn may be in any of their dual ownership houses. Chandrashekhars comment: I think the verse is talking about 6 planets including Moon, in exaltation. Verse 2

Meaning: All planets are placed in their Moolatrikona houses or in their friendly houses should be conjunct with Mars or they be placed in their exaltation sign but devoid of debilitated Navamsa then such a native will be equal to a King. Note: Moolatrikona houses of planets are as follows: Sun Leo; Moon Taurus; Mars Aries; Mercury Virgo; Jupiter Sagittarius; Venus Libra; Saturn Aquarius. Here also conditions as applicable to second part of Verse 1 regarding position of Sun, Venus and Mercury applies. The friendly houses of planets are as follows: Sun Cancer, Aries/Scorpio, Sagittarius/Pisces Moon Leo, Gemini/Virgo Mars Leo, Cancer, Sagittarius/Pisces Mercury Leo, Taurus/Libra Jupiter Leo, Cancer, Aries/Scorpio Venus Gemini/Virgo, Capricorn/Aquarus Saturn Gemini/Virgo, Taurus/Libra With regard to the planet getting exalted in Rasi chart and thereby going into debilitation, the following table will illustrate it: Planet Exaltation Rasi Longitude Debilitation Rasi in Navamsa Libra Nil Cancer Pisces Capricorn Virgo Deep point of exaltation in Rasi Aries - 10 Taurus - 3 Capricorn - 28 Virgo - 15 Cancer - 5 Pisces - 27

Sun Moon Mars Mercury Jupiter Venus 2

Yenbeeyes Edited by: Sri C.S.Chandrashekar (Published in Astrovision E Journal Vol. 4 Issue No 43 of July 2011) Saturn Libra 20 - 23 20 Aries Libra - 20

Thus it can be seen when a planet is in its deep exaltation point it does not get debilitated in Navamsa. However, if we take into consideration the entire Rasi of exaltation, the longitudes as shown in column 3 against each planet places the planet in its debilitation point in Navamsa which the author says should not be the position to get the results of Royal living. Verse 3

Meaning: Moon in Lagna, Jupiter in sukhasthana or 4th house, Venus in Karmasthana or 10th house and Saturn is placed in Capricorn or Aquarius or its exaltation house Libra, then such a native will live like a King. Verse 4

Meaning: When Sampoorna Grahas (Benefic planets) are placed in the 10th, 11th, 12th, Lagna, 2nd and 3rd houses such a native will be like a King. Note: It is not clear whether only the natural Saumya (benefic) planets are to be considered or the functional benefics. Chandrashekhars comment: It is only natural benefics that are to be considered. Verse 5

Meaning: Saumya Grahas are placed in Kendra and/or Trikona and malefics placed in 6th, 11th and 3rd houses and Lagna Lord is in strength, then that native is similar to the King. Note: In many places the author has used only the word Saumya to indicate benefics and PApA to indicate malefics. Chandrashekhars comment: The use of plural noun for saumya indicates natural benefics. Verse 6

Meaning: In such a situation (as described in the previous shloka) if Jupiter is with Mercury or aspected by Mercury Any command given by such a native will be accepted by the King with due respect. Verse 7

Meaning: Moon is in Kendra position other than Lagna and Jupiter is aspecting it by its trikona aspect (5th and 9th) and powerful Venus is also aspecting it, then such a native will be a bhagyavan (a fortunate person) like the King. Note: Moon must be placed in the 4th, 7th or 10th from Lagna and Jupiter must be in the 5th or 9th from Moon and Venus must be in the 7th from Moon to get a situation as described above. Chandrashekhars Note: This could also mean that the trines should be aspected by Jupiter. This means whereas Moon will be in either of 4th,7th or the 10th house Jupiter shall occupy the Lagna giving a powerful Gajkesari yoga. Since Shukra will be opposing Moon from another kendra, there is also a shubha yoga occurring in the chart leading to the Jataka getting fortune equal to a King. Verse 8

Meaning: When a planet is debilitated in Rasi chart but exalted in Navamsa, then such a native will be a fortunate one like a King. But, a planet exalted in Rasi but debilitated in Navamsa shall not give the same fortune (of King like fortune). Verse 9

Meaning: Divide the avasthas into three parts as also the Lagna Kundali or Rasi chakra. This is stated by Rishis. Benefic planets placed in such divisions give results according to their placements in that order only. Note: Pandit Shyamlal gives explanation as to the Avasthas. This one is different from what Parasara has stated in BPHS as also the determination of Baladi avastha using Drekkana division. According to the Pandit, Avasthas are divided into three parts The first part gives results upto 32nd year, the second division is from 32nd year to 64th year and the last and third part gives results between 64th 4

Yenbeeyes Edited by: Sri C.S.Chandrashekar (Published in Astrovision E Journal Vol. 4 Issue No 43 of July 2011) and 100th year. For the Rasi chakra From Lagna to 4th house is first part, from 5th house to 8th house it is second division and from 8th house to 12th house it is the third part. So any shubha graha (benefic planet) when placed in any of the first four houses (from Lagna) should give its Raja Yoga results during the initial 32 years of the native. And likewise for the other parts, we have to deduce. Chandrashekhars comment: I think Panditji has erred in talking about avasthas. What is being said

is to divide the chart in three parts beginning from 12th bhava ( ), in proportion to th rd the total life span. Thus the three parts would be from 12 bhava to 3 bhava is first part indicating first 1/3rd part of life, from 4th to 7th second part representing the middle third part of life and 8th to 11th third part representing last 1/3rd part of a jatakas life. The part of life where benefics ( maximum) are placed indicated good period of life for the jataka.
Verse 10

Meaning: Jupiter is placed in Lagna and Mercury is placed in a Kendra and is aspected by the 9th Lord as also the Lagna Lord, such a native will be getting all the respects like of that of a King. Chandrashekhars comment: This means that Guru should be in Lagna and Budha be in Kendra in aspect of the 9th lord OR/and aspected by Lagna lord makes a jataka honoured by King. Verse 11

Meaning: When Jupiter is placed in the 7th house or in the trikona sthanas of 5th or 9th and is aspected by the Lagna Lord, then the native will have the recognition of a King. Verse 12

Meaning: Saturn in Kendra or Trikona (5 or 9) or in its exaltation house (Libra) or its Moolatrikona house (Aquarius) or is having its 10th aspect, then that native will be respected like a King. Chanbdrashekhars comment: This is saying that Saturn has to be in kendra or Kona in its rashi of exaltation or Mula trikona and in aspect of the 10th lord (Rajyadhipa is lord of rajya bhava that is the 10th bhava), for a jataka to be honoured by a king. Here what is happening is Saturn who is lord of the 10thin natural zodiac is very strong by sthana bala and Uccaadi bala and gets aspect of the 10th lord, leading to honour by king as the 10th bhava is also called the maana sthana (house of honour).

Yenbeeyes Edited by: Sri C.S.Chandrashekar (Published in Astrovision E Journal Vol. 4 Issue No 43 of July 2011) Verse 13

Meaning: Debilitated Jupiter is in Lagna and 9th Lord is in the 8th house and is in the Navamsa of Moon, such a native will have the recognition of a King. Note: Hence Lagna must be Capricorn and the 9th Lord Mercury must be between 10 and 13 20 in the 8th house Leo to get the Cancer Navamsa. Chandrashekhars comment: There is something flawed in the shloka. Moon is nowhere mentioned in the text of the shloka. Again why 9th lord in navamsha of its enemy Moon should give good results is not clear. One interpretation of the shloka could be as follows, Should Guru occupy the lagna or the 8th house in debility and be conjunct the 9th lord in own navamsha, the jataka would be honoured by king. In this case there will be rajyoga as a planet in debility or exaltation, aspecting / conjunct lagna causes raj yoga and a planet in debility in the 8th also causes Vipareet rajyoga. Such a Guru will also be conjunct a vargottam 9th lord giving it more strength as Guru himself is the 9th lord in natural zodiac. Verse 14

Meaning: When all planets are placed from Lagna to the 6th house or the 9th Lord is placed along with Moon in the 2nd house, the native is equal to a King. Note from CSS: Apparently this is a printers devil as the word should be Verse 15

Meaning: When the Navamsa Lord of the lord of the rashi occupied by Moon is placed in Kendra or Trikona or eleventh house or joined with Mercury, then such a native will be equal to that of a King. Note: Note the position of Moon in Rasi. The Navamsa lord of the lord of that Rasi must be placed in Kendras or trikonas or in the 11th house or with Mercury obviously in the Rasi chart. Verse 16

Yenbeeyes Edited by: Sri C.S.Chandrashekar (Published in Astrovision E Journal Vol. 4 Issue No 43 of July 2011)

Meaning: Moon along with Mars is placed in the 2nd house or the 3rd house and with Rahu in the 5th house, native will be like a King. Verse 17

Meaning: Ninth Lord is with its Navamsa Lord and is placed in the fourth house or with the 5th lord, then such a native will be like a King. Note: Ninth Lord as well its Navamsa Lord should be in the fourth house or the ninth lord is with the 5th lord in the 4th house is the meaning to be understood here. Verse 18

Meaning: Malefic planets conjunct the 10th lord and the malefics being placed in order from Lagna to 6th house, then that native will be recognized like a King. Verse 19

Meaning: Rahu is placed in Pisces along with Saturn and aspected by the 9th lord and Lagna Lord has conjoined a debilitated planet will make a man akin to that of a King. Chandrashekhars comment: I think the translator has wrongly translated mada as Manda, what is meant is : When Rahu occupies the 7th bhava (mde) in Pisces rashi, in aspect of the 9th lord and the lagna lord is conjunct a planet in debility, the man becomes akin to a king. Verse 20

Yogas described in Jyotish Shyama Sangraha-Part 5

Yenbeeyes Edited by: Sri C.S.Chandrashekar (Published in Astrovision E Journal Vol. 4 Issue No 43 of July 2011) Meaning: This verse deals with the four planets Mars, Saturn, Sun and Jupiter when they are placed in their exaltation sign and are in front of each other and placed in Kendra positions. 1. When all the planets are placed as above, four types of Raja Yoga are formed. 2. Out of these four planets only three planets are so placed then twelve types of Raja Yoga are formed. 3. If only two planets are placed in their exaltation positions and are in Kendra and Moon is in Cancer then also twelve types of Raja Yoga are formed. 4. If only one planet is placed in the exaltation position in Lagna and Moon is in Cancer and the rest of the planets might be situated elsewhere four types of Raja Yoga are formed. So a total of 32 Yogas are formed in this fashion. This is illustrated by the following table.
