WHAT: The National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ), a nonpartisan research and policy group, will release a study of student teaching that identifies systemic problems and individual successes in the nations student teaching programs and provides specific recommendations for improvement. The report, Student Teaching in the United States, is based on information gathered from 134 elementary teacher preparation programs (10 percent of those in the nation), and offers a preview of how NCTQ will rate institutions on the quality of their student teaching programs for its 2012 national review, undertaken in partnership with US News & World Report. The mornings discussion will focus not only on the reports findings and implications but also feature a broader debate involving friends and foes of NCTQs national review. Panelists include the editor of US News and World Report, deans of several schools of education, a former state school chief who has endorsed the NCTQ review, and the head of a national accrediting body for education schools.
