2011 Civic Census Overview


1.

TOTAL POPULATION: is 1,090,936 an increase of 19,421 residents from 2010.


Calgarys population grew from 1,071,515 in April 2010 to 1,090,936 in April
of 2011. This represents an increase of 1.81%. This volume of population
growth is similar to what was experienced in 2001 and 2003.
Panorama Hills continued to lead the way in growth with a population
increase of 1952 residents. Four other communities also had an increase of
more than 1000 residents. The communities with a population increase of
more than 1000 are:
Panorama Hills (1952 residents)
Auburn Bay (1552 residents)
New Brighton (1236 residents)
Cranston (1186 residents)
Skyview Ranch (1093 residents)
Four communities grew by 100% or more. The communities are:

Mahogany (205% or 530 residents),

Walden (183% or 384 residents),

Skyview Ranch (154% or 1093 residents),

Sage Hill (102% or 718 residents).

NATURAL INCREASE: was slightly lower in 2011, but continues to be a major


source of growth for the city.
Natural increase is a result of the excess of births over deaths. The natural
increase during 2010-2011 was 9,858 persons, down 356 from the previous
period 2009-2010.

NET MIGRATION: an increase of 9,563 people over the past 12 months.


Net migration is the difference between the number of persons moving into
Calgary and the number moving away. Over the past 12 months, 9,563 more
people moved to Calgary than moved away from Calgary. This is a
significant increase over 2010 when Calgary experienced a negative net
migration with 4,154 more people moving away from Calgary than to Calgary.

Net migration and natural increase contributed almost evenly to Calgarys


population growth.

HOUSING: housing stock continues to rise and the vacancy rate decreased
slightly.
The number of dwellings both existing and under construction is 450,952.
This is an increase of 5,497over April 2010.
The number of vacant dwelling units in Calgary decreased from 16,929 in
2010 to 16,180 in 2011. The overall vacancy rate in the city is 3.69%, down
from 3.93% in April 2010. A vacant dwelling is defined as a dwelling that is
suitable and available for occupancy and does not include those dwellings
under construction or renovation.
There are now 422,290 occupied dwellings. Of this number, 296,020 or
70.1% are owner-occupied. In 2010, the comparable percentage was
70.65%.

AGE AND GENDER: As per Census Policy, age and gender data was collected
in 2011. The total number of males (547, 782) slightly exceeds the number of
females (543, 154). In the breakdown of age groups, the largest age groups are
25-34 (16.79%) and 35-44 (16.68%).

NUMBER OF EMPLOYED: As per Census Policy, the number of employed was


collected in 2011. The total number of respondents 15 years of age and older
who indicated they worked either part-time or full-time, including those who are
self employed is 585,169. This represents 65.29% of the population 15 years of
age and older.

MODE OF TRANSPORTATION: 2011 was the inaugural year for the mode of
transportation question. One working respondent in each household was asked
how they travelled to work. Results showed that the most common mode of
transportation used was driving alone with 69.58% of working respondents
indicating they drove to work alone.

Glossary of Terms
Annexation

The incorporation of additional territory into The City limits. The


City limits are defined by the Province for the City of Calgary and
are changed only through annexation or deannexation.

Dwelling

A self contained unit with full cooking, sleeping and sanitary


facilities which are not part of an institution.

Dwelling Unit
Used of Other
Purposes

A structure or unit that was originally built as a dwelling and which


could be used as a dwelling again, but which is presently used for
non-residential purposes.

Employed

Employed persons include those 15 years of age and older who


are employed full or part time. This includes those who are selfemployed, employed by others and persons who may not be
working temporarily due to health, vacation, weather, labour
disputes or other personal reasons such as bereavement.

Natural
Increase

The result of the excess of births over deaths.

Net Migration

The difference between the number of persons moving into


Calgary and the number moving away.

Occupancy
Rate
Owner
Occupancy
Rate

The average number of residents per dwelling.


The percentage of occupied dwellings owned by the occupant.

Resident

A person who maintains residence in the City of Calgary is


considered a resident. This includes newly arrived persons,
persons absent on courses or for educational purposes, persons
temporarily located at remote work sites, or persons attending
university outside the City of Calgary, etc. The resident must
consider the Calgary residence as their permanent address.

Structure Type

The physical structure of the dwelling, or the physical structure of


the building in which the dwelling is located. See all structure
type definitions on the Structure Type Legend.

Under
Construction

A dwelling unit is considered under construction as soon as the


foundation is poured and until the structure is ready for
occupancy.

Vacancy Rate

The percentage of all dwellings that are available to be occupied,


that are not currently occupied.

Vacant
Dwelling

A vacant unit is one which is uninhabited at the time of the


Census, but is suitable and available for occupancy.

Mode of Transportation

2011 was the inaugural year of the mode of transportation question. One working
resident in each household was asked how they travelled to work on the last day they
worked. If multiple modes of transportation were used, the respondent was asked to
indicate which mode they used for the greatest distance.

Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIP)


Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy rules are applied to the data to
ensure that no individual can be identified in any of the data released.
If there are 5 or less residents showing within a community or if there are 10 or less
residents in 20 or fewer dwellings units within a community the data is removed from
the community and included under the residual area for the ward.
Census data, at the dwelling unit level, becomes public from The City of Calgary
Archives once the data has been in existence for 50 years.
