1. Background information
In Nepal, maize is the second most important crop after rice in terms of area and production. It
occupies a momentous position because of the multiple uses of this crop. It can be used as food,
feed, fodder, fuel and raw materials for various industrial purposes. Maize is the main ingredient
for poultry and animal feeds. The exponential growth of the human population and change of
food habit in the recent years, people are consuming more milk, meat, fish and eggs because of
increasing trends of income every year. The increased demand of those items needs more maize
grains for poultry and animals feeds. Maize has low reserve in the international market compared
to other cereal crops and has not a market problem worldwide because of the high demand of
milk and meat products. Farmers in maize growing countries including Nepal have not problem
of marketing of maize grains. In developed countries, maize is considered as an industrial crop
whereas in Nepal, it is emerging as cash crop in the areas where green cobs are sold. In addition,
Maize grain produced in many terai and in some mid hill districts can sell their maize
immediately after harvesting and thus emerging maize as cash crop. The ever increasing demand
of maize cannot be met easily simply cultivating with open pollinated improved varieties. The
productivity of OPVs cannot be increased from a certain level even if provided with more
fertilizers and improved crop management. The productivity of maize can be increased by
growing with different types of hybrids particularly single cross hybrids. In the recent years,
there is overwhelming demand of hybrid seeds and hybrid technology mostly in terai and inner

3
terai where hybrids are grown after rice in winter and spring seasons. The demand is also there in
some mid hill districts and in valleys of foot hills and river basin areas.
Of the 23 maize cultivars released in Nepal, Gaurav, single cross hybrid maize, which was
released in 2003 in the history of hybrid maize breeding efforts initiated since 1987. This
historical hybrid could not be popularized in hybrid maize growing areas because of the
difficulty in its seed production particularly in private sector. This situation has left no varietal
options for growing hybrid maize in Nepal and farmers have to rely on seeds of multi-national
hybrid companies based mostly in India. In many cases, farmers are paying higher prices for
hybrid seeds and in some cases; they are also cheated both in price and quality. The available
options for the hybrid maize growing farmers are limited. Either they should grow improved
OPVs developed by NMRP or go through the Indian hybrids sold by private seed entrepreneurs.
They grow Indian hybrids simply because of unavailability of seeds of our Nepalese hybrids,
higher yields of hybrids compared to OPVs, uniformity in maturity, and tolerance to biotic and
abiotic stresses.
To address this real situation, development of high yielding as well as competitive hybrids and
releasing hybrids in a regular basis is the sustainable way of increasing production and
productivity of maize in order to meet the ever increasing demand of maize for feeds in
accessible areas and human consumption for mid hills. Releasing hybrid varieties in a cyclic
order will create more varietal options and make breakthrough in the history of maize production
in Nepal with hybrids and hybrid technology, which ultimately help to improve food security and
reduce poverty and hunger in the country. Keeping all these in consideration, NMRP has thus
prepared and submitted a proposal to the National Seed Board (NSB) for release a single cross
maize hybrid with proposed name is Rampur hybrid-2 in English and Rampur Barnashankar -2
in Nepali.

3. Summary of Varietal Characteristics

3.1 Agronomic
This is a full-season hybrid and has yield potential up to 10.5 tones/ha. Kernel is yellow and flint
type. Plant stature is similar to Gaurav hybrid. Its erect leaves and medium plant height offers
high density planting. Stem is robust and has no lodging problem. This hybrid can be grown in
the winter, spring and summer seasons in terai and inner terai regions. However, main growing
seasons are winter and summer seasons. It performs well in winter as compared to spring and
summer seasons. The difference between days to tasseling and silking is 3-5 days but tasseling
days ranged from 64 days in summer to 103 days in late winter. Silking days ranged from 67 in
summer to 107 days in late winter (Table 4 and Annexure 3-15). The hybrid produced higher
grain yield in early winter planting (7005 kg ha-1) followed by late winter (5579 kg ha-1) and
summer (3555 kg ha-1). The major morphological traits of the inbred lines are presented in the
Table 5.

Seed parent (RML-4) is short and has cylindrical ears with irregular row arrangement and
produces a good seed yield 1.5- 3 t ha-1. Pollen parent (NML-2) has medium plant height with
erect leaves and glabrous leaf sheath. Pollen parent takes 69 GDU to shed pollen of seed parent
when the seeds are planted at the same time. Parents are easy for crossing and varietal
maintenance is not so difficult.

3.2. Response to stresses (please specify):

3.2.1 Biotic stresses
(a) Insects: Among the 32 tested genotypes including OPVs, QPM, Hybrids and Local
check in Rampur. It is apparent from the results that RML4/NML2 showed minimum
infestation of maize stem borer. The exits holes formed by the pests were also found
minimum in this genotype (Annexure 31).
(b) Diseases: Hybrid RML-4/NML-2 has shown resistant to moderately resistant reaction
against leaf blight diseases (Northern leaf blight, Southern leaf blight and Banded leaf
and sheath blight (BLSB) in natural condition (Annexure 29 and 30), though its
inbred exhibited moderately susceptible reaction against NLB under artificially
inoculated condition (Annexure 4 and 30).
(c) Weeds: No specific association of weeds with this variety and does not require any special
care for weed management. However, the field should be free from weed to attain
higher grain yield and crop management practices applied to other maize hybrids or
OPVs is also sufficient for this variety.
3.2.2 Abiotic stresses
(a) Adverse climatic conditions: The hybrid maize lines along with other promising lines
were evaluated under heat screening nursery at NMRP, Rampur; RARS, Parwanipur;
and RARS, Tarahara in summer season of 2010 (Table ). The results showed that it
prefer favorable environment rather than heat stress condition for higher yield
performance. The crop could not perform well under any type of stress condition such
as water stagnation, drought, heat and cold stresses. The genotypes can flourish its
potentiality under optimum condition.

7
(b) Adverse soil conditions: The crop prefers loam to sandy loam soil for better yield
performance. It requires frequent irrigation and heavy dose of manure and fertilizer
than OPVs to obtain expected yield.
(c ) Other stresses, if any:

4.1. Major identifying characteristics of a crop variety for cultivar authenticity:
The genotype can be distinguished from others maize genotypes by following traits.
RML4/NML2: Kernel is yellow and flint type. Erect and stay green leaves, robust stem
and medium plant height.
RML4: Seed parent is short plant height, cylindrical ears with irregular row arrangement
NML2: Pollen parent has medium plant height with erect leaves and glabrous leaf sheath
4.2. Molecular characteristics (Not available)

5. Recommendation domain:
5.1 Geographical area (altitude, latitude and longitude): The hybrid was tested at many locations
from east to mid-western terai in the various experimental trials i.e. screening nursery, observation
nursery, CVT and FFT (Table 1). Therefore, this variety is proposed to recommend for commercial
cultivation from east terai to mid-western Terai, and inner Terai of Nepal.

5.2 Moisture regime: partially irrigated and irrigated. Soil moisture as well atmospheric
moisture is critical at 7 days before and after flowering.
5.3 Climatic conditions: If the atmospheric temperature rises more than 38 oc pollen grains start
to die by appearing tassel firing symptoms and atmospheric temperature below 8o C is not
also suitable during flowering time.
5.4 Cropping pattern:
The variety is suitable under both maize and rice based cropping system. However, higher
level of production can be obtained when the crop is grown in winter rather than summer
planting.
a. Maize based cropping system:
Maize-Soybean-Vegetables
Maize-Rajma-Vegetables
Maize-Sesame-Maize
Maize-Black gram-tori etc.
b. Rice based cropping system:
Rice-Maize-Mungbean
Rice-Maize-Cowpea
Rice-Maize-Vegetables
Rice-Wheat-Maize
Maize-Maize-Rice etc.
5.5 Socioeconomic conditions: The farmers who are growing maize in terai and inner terai
condition can easily grow this variety. However, this variety requires special care and
attention than OPVs but similar level of management as given to Indian hybrids is required.
Large scale seed production of inbred lines and hybrid seed production can be done by
private sectors with qualified manpower and by an enthusiastic people who can bear the risk
of handling large scale seed production and can get benefits from this technology. Since the
variety has stay green character, farmers can use as fodder after harvesting and get more
benefits from this variety than others from milk and milk products. So, the variety is friendly
even to resource poor farmers, who can get higher yield per unit area.

9
5.6 Economic analysis and benefit: Hybrid seed production could be a very remunerative seed
business in Nepal. Modern inbred lines give at least 3 t ha -1 of seeds. Seed parent covers
about 75% of total area if we plant in a ratio of 3:1. If we assume only 80% pollination
success, hybrid seed yield from 1 ha would be 3000 x 0.8 x 0.75 = 1800 kg of seeds. Retail
price of different categories of hybrids in market is ranged from NRs 85- 500/kg. If we sell at
whole sale rate of NRs. 150/kg, 1 ha will generate a total income of 1800 x 150 = NRs. 270,
000. Cost involved in seed production depends on the localities where the seed production is
done. Based on the rough estimation, Rs.100, 000/ha would be sufficient to cover all the
production costs. Thus, net profit would be Rs. 170,000 per ha. This clearly shows that
hybrid maize seed production is a highly profitable business. Private seed companies should
come forward to commercialize the hybrid seed production as their role is crucial in
commercialization of hybrid seed and hybrid technology.
6

Production and management aspect (Please add detailed information, if necessary, on the
general cultivation practices; appropriate input and moisture regimes): Package of practice is
similar to the Gaurav, released in 2003 and other hybrids of multi-national companies, which
are growing by farmers in hybrid maize growing districts.

6.1 Agronomic Practices:

2-3 ploughings are needed for land preparation. First ploughing should be carried out 30
days prior to maize sowing.
The appropriate date of maize sowing in Terai and inner Terai of Nepal ranges from 15th
August to15th October, respectively. However, it can be grown before 15th November.
The recommended dose of fertilizer 160:60:40 N:P2O5:K2O kg ha-1 along with 10-15 tons
of farm yard manure. However, it gives highest grain yield upto 180 K2O kg ha-1 nitrogen
(Annexure 28). FYM and full dose of P205 and K20 along with 50% nitrogen should be
applied during last ploughing (before crop sowing). 25% Urea should be top-dressed
during knee high stage and 25% just prior to tasseling and silking.
Seed rate 25 kg ha-1 (66666 plants/ha) for general grain production.
The recommended planting space for hybrid variety is given in (Annexure 21, Annexure
23 and Annexure 24):
Row-to-Row distance: 75 cm
Plant to plant distance: 20 cm
6.1.1 Weeding: First weeding should be done within 20-25 days and second weeding (earthing
up) within 40-45 days after the germination. Priority should be given to manual weeding.
However, Glyphosate @ 5ml/litre as pre-planting and Pendimethylene @ 5.5 ml/litre can be
applied as pre-emergence. Post emergence can be applied with 2-4-D @ 3ml/litre of water.
6.1.2 Irrigation: Knee high stage, tasseling and silking, and grain filling stages are most critical
for moisture stress. Light irrigation should be applied to the maize crop at these stages depending
on the soil moisture status and irrigation facilities.
6.1.3 Detasseling: If weather condition is normal (high humidity and temperature less than 38oc),
30% plants can be detasseled, which helps to increase maize production up to 7%.

10
6.1.4 Harvesting: Crop should be harvested after physiological maturity. Maize can be
harvested when black layer is formed on maize grains.
6.1.5 Drying: Maize ears should be sun dried for 3-4 days and before shelling. Grains should be
dried on the tarpaulin and covered during the night. When the grain moisture is reduced down
to 12%, then grains are either stored in metal bins or kept in sealed bags after processing of
seeds.
7. Reasons for release
There are very limited hybrid varietal options for growing hybrids in Nepal. A single
cross hybrid Gaurav was released in 2003 but it could not be popularized among the
farmers due to difficulty in its seed production particularly in private sector. NMRP could
not release hybrids in a regular basis due to low investments of resources in hybrid
breeding program. Due to unavailability of hybrid seeds within the country, farmers
mostly in terai, inner terai and in road accessible areas of foot hills started to buy Indian
multi- national hybrid seeds due to high yield potentiality and uniformity of hybrids over
OPVs. However, farmers in those areas had been growing maize hybrids since many
years. Nowadays, there is overwhelming demand of hybrid seeds due to high demand of
maize grains for poultry, animal feeds and other industrial purposes.

Farmers in hybrid maize growing areas in Terai and in some mid hill districts are using
hybrid seeds mostly from multi-national seed companies based mostly in India and seeds
are expensive ranging from NRs, 85 to 500/kg. Huge amount of money is spent to
purchase maize seeds from India. This investment can be minimized and outgoing money
can be minimized and saved. Seeds will be cheaper as we produced within the country
and quality is assured and there is no chance cheating farmers in the name of fake hybrid
seeds.

Releasing this variety creates a better opportunity for commercialization in hybrid maize
seed production in private sector and could benefit the farmers, seed growers and others,
who are involved in seed production and distribution chains. Country will be benefit in
the long run with improved food security through increased production.

This variety is moderately resistant to resistant against foliar diseases especially Northern
leaf blight, Southern leaf blight, and Banded leaf and sheath blight. It gives stable and
higher grain yields up to 8.6 t ha-1, uniformity in plant, ear height and in maturity.

As it creates more varietal options and farmers will have choices for growing maize
hybrids. Dependency in importing maize grains required for poultry and animal industries
will be reduced and steps towards self-sufficiency of maize in the country will be kicked
off.

8. Seed supply situation

NMRP has been maintaining numbers of inbred lines and many released and pre released maize
varieties since many years. Although the available seed of these inbred lines and hybrids are not

11
sufficient for selling in the market but it can provide sufficient amount of source seed for seed
multiplication purpose as demanded by the interested stakeholders.
