PERFORMANCE TASK 2 RESEARCH AND REAL LIFE APPLICATIONS: SLOPE AND CARTESIAN PLANE

I. Slope in Real-life Objects

The object that I chose is a picture frame. As you can see, the diagonal stand that is slanting at the back of the frame exhibits the characteristics of the slope. Slope is important in this object because without the stand behind the frame, the frame will just topple down. The function of this stand is to support the picture frame so that it could stand still. Thats why slope is important to this object.

II. History of the Cartesian Plane and Its Real-life Applications The adjective Cartesian refers to the French mathematician and philosopher Ren Descartes (who used the name Cartesius in Latin). The idea of this system was developed in 1637 in two writings by Descartes and independently by Pierre de Fermat, although Fermat used three dimensions, and did not publish the discovery.[1] Descartes introduces the new idea of specifying the position of a point or object on a surface, using two intersecting axes as measuring guides. In La Gomtrie, he further explores the abovementioned concepts. The development of the Cartesian coordinate system enabled the development of perspective and projective geometry. It would later play an intrinsic role in the development of calculus byIsaac Newton and Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz.

Nicole Oresme, a French philosopher of the 14th Century, used constructions similar to Cartesian coordinates well before the time of Descartes. Many other coordinate systems have been developed since Descartes, such as the polar coordinates for the plane, and the spherical and cylindrical coordinates for three-dimensional space. Cartesian Planes are usually used to section off certain objects in sciences such as archaeology and lab biology. These typically only deal with the first quadrant. Geography also has use for the Cartesian Plane by stretching it across the globe and making maps. Latitude and Longitude are recorded as ordered pairs.Statisticians also use Cartesian Planes to track information and trends. Physicists, Economists, Engineers, and field biologists often do the same by allowing time to be x and some other factor to be y. This allows them to represent data in a way that makes more sense to the human mind than a long chart of numbers.

III. Enrichment Activity Profession: Bank Manager/Financial Manager

As a bank manager, you are faced with large amount of numbers each day. You are to deal with mathematical calculations and equations. Coordinate graphing is also used which deals with the Cartesian plane. Statistical graphing is also used by some. With the use of the Cartesian plane, you can do statistical graphing, coordinate graphing, evaluation of banks performance, advanced statistics and financial data analysis.
