LANDSCAPE TROPHY 2011

CELEBRATING THE PAST

Manmade Landscapes are the collective expressions of the cultures, beliefs, values, systems of the society. Memory, events, attachments, places are some of the dimensions of the past which are embodied in these expressions. Sometimes the past continues in the present in fragments. In the context of growing pressures on land and resources, and radically changing value systems, there is need to contemplate about how does one respond to the past and its dimensions. This design competition seeks to bring forth the design responses to the past. The entrants can select an open space in public realm of significance (urban or rural) which has strong community value but has undergone or is undergoing transformation due to various reasons. There is no limitation on the choice of space in terms of scale, type, function, etc. but should be essentially a space in public domain. The typology can include ( and is not limited to) spaces of religious / sociocultural significance (river ghats, sacred precincts, fair grounds, weekly market grounds etc) , historical precincts / landscapes, streets, roads, squares, hills, and many more. It is expected to present a design idea based upon the analytical study of the context of the space highlighting both its past and its present challenges. The entry can be an individual project or a group entry with not more than four students in a group.

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS The entire project (including the analytical study and design idea) shall be presented in not more than three (3 nos.)
