Macklin Guitar Class

Congratulations! You have entered the second year of Macklin Guitar Class. You probably have a t-shirt. Classroom Expectations It is expected that all students while in class: y y y y y Listen and not disrupt others from listening. Raise a hand to ask a question or get my attention. Respect other people s guitars; NEVER play another person s guitar without their permission. Have your guitar and course materials here every day. If you have an electric guitar and an amplifier, you MUST use headphones, or unplug it.

*This year, we will not grab guitars as soon as we come to class. There will be attendance and announcements/lessons at the beginning of each class. Please do not pick up your guitar until directed by the teacher. Students that do not meet these expectations consistently will be removed from the course to work on core subjects. Course Materials y y y y y y You will need:

A guitar, acoustic, classical or electric. A tuner Capo A 2 inch, 3 ring binder for handouts, and music. Pencil Headphones (if you have an electric guitar)

Review of: tablature, chords, strumming patterns. Guitar maintenance how to change strings, and how to look for problems with a guitar. Classroom performance testing.

MARK BREAKDOWN THEORY: 20%

It is expected that students will show proper use of a guitar. This includes posture, techniques of strumming and picking, as well as tuning and maintenance. Students will learn basic music theory, chord identification, reading tablature, and strumming patterns. Students will then use new terminology to describe and explain music they encounter. PERFORMANCE: Students will demonstrate proficiency in performing: y y y y y y Quality sounds Proper chords Chord changes Able to play simple music from a variety of genres Strumming patterns Consistent rhythm 20% 40%

PUBLIC PERFORMANCE:

Students will be asked to perform publicly in the following venues: y y y y y y March gathering area recital mandatory Cavalcade of Stars mandatory Assemblies optional Noon hour busking - optional Christmas concert optional Elementary classrooms - optional

Students will be required to write their own piece of music with or without lyrics. They will also show respect for personal work and the work of others through appropriate critique. Students will be encouraged and rewarded for improvising a piece of music.

The more you practice, the more fun you will have.
