Setiawan el al report that they have discovered an extra solar planet orbiting the star HIP 13044 located

approximately 2100 light years from Earth. It is an unusual discovery as HIP13044 and its planet are thought to be of extragalactic origin.HIP13044 is classified as a red giant belonging to the Red Giant Branch of stars. It is also a member of the Helmi stream of stars that wander through the galactic halo which are stars thought to have been assimilated into the Milky Way when it collided with a galaxy billions of years ago. Method. The discovery was made using a spectrograph attached to a 2.2 metre telescope.By analysing spectral lines(CalciumII 849.8) it was possible to detect Doppler variations(caused by wobbling in the host stars motion)which might indicate the presence of a planet. It was important to rule out the possibility that their results were due to other stellar activity such as star spots, surface shape variations, changes in brightness of HIP13044 as well as errors in data analysis.
