[Octet on the Goddess Mookambika] Translated by P. R.Ramachander [Mookambika is the goddess presiding over the temple town of Kollur, 135 km from Mangalore, Karnataka. Here the goddess is in the linga form. In the smaller half of the linga, Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma reside and in the bigger half (separated by a golden line) resides the mother goddesses of Durga, Saraswathi and Lakshmi. In the ancient times, it is believed that there was a saint called Kola Maharshi who did penance at the present Kollur (the place was named after him). He was troubled by a Rakshasa called Mookasura. The Adhi Prashakthi killed Mookasura and helped Kola Maharshi to do penance in peace. That is the reason why she is called Mookambika. She is a very popular goddess of Karnataka and Kerala. People of Kerala consider her as Saraswathi and make it a point to visit Kollur as often as possible. It is a dream for many of them to teach the first alphabets to their babies in the Mookambika Temple on the Vijaya Dasami day.] Namasthe Jagad dhatri Sad Brahma roope, Namasthe haropendradathradhi vandhye, Namasthe prapanneshta danaika dakshe, Namasthe Mahalakshmi, kola puresi. 1 Salutations to Mahalakshmi, who is Goddess of Kolapura, Salutations to the mother of universe, the essence of existence, Salutations to her who is worshipped by Siva, Indra and Brahma, Salutations to her who fulfills wishes of surrendering devotees. Vidhi kruthivasa harir viswamedath, Srujath yaththipaatheethiyathad prasidham, Krupaloka nadhe, aavadhe Shakthiroope, Namasthe Mahalakshmi, kola puresi. 2 Salutations to Mahalakshmi, who is Goddess of Kolapura, For it is well known that Lord Brahma creates and Lord Vishnu cares, And Lord Shiva destroys at the end but it is you, with look of mercy, Who is the personification of power, whom they worship. Thwaya mayayaa vyaptha medath samastham, Drutham leelayadevi kukshouhi viswam, Sthithambudhi roopena sarvathra janthou, Namasthe Mahalakshmi, kola puresi. 3 Salutations to Mahalakshmi, who is Goddess of Kolapura, For you pervade the entire universe through your illusion, You playfully bear in your womb, the entire universe, And you exist in all the beings in the form of intelligence.

Yayaa bhaktha varga hi lakshyantha yethe, Thwaya athra prakamamkrupa poorna drushtya, Adhogeeyasedevi Lakshhmeer idhi thwam, Namasthe Mahalakshmi, kola puresi. 4 Salutations to Mahalakshmi, who is Goddess of Kolapura, For you are being approached by your devotees, For getting blessed by your greatly merciful look, Downwards to them and they call you Hey Mahalakshmi. Punar Vak paduthwathi, heenahi mooka, Naraiisthair nikamam kalu prardhyase yath, Nijasyapthaye thwacha mookabika thwam, Namasthe Mahalakshmi, kola puresi. 5 Salutations to Mahalakshmi, who is Goddess of Kolapura, For those men without great expression and Downgraded dumb people, pray earnestly for your grace, And thou make them talented and wise, Oh Mookambika. Yad advaitha roopad, para brahmana sthwam, Samuddha punair viswa valeelodhyamastha, ThadahurJanasthwamcha Gowri Kumari, Namasthe Mahalakshmi, kola puresi. 6 Salutations to Mahalakshmi, who is Goddess of Kolapura For you are the supreme spirit which stands alone, You created the entire world as if it is a play, And in spite of that people call you Gowri and Kumari. Haresadhi dehotdha thyejo mayapra, Sphurad chakra rajakya linga swaroope, Maha yogi kolarhi hruth padma gehe, Namasthe Mahalakshmi, kola puresi. 7 Salutations to Mahalakshmi, who is Goddess of Kolapura Your form Sri Chakra, which is king of all known holy symbols, Emanated from the very great splendour of Shiva and Vishnu, And you reside in the lotus heart of the great Yogi called Kola rishi. Nama Shanka chakra bhaya abeeshta hasthe, Namasthe Ambike, Gowri Padmasanasthe, Nama suvarna varne, prasanne saranya, Namasthe Mahalakshmi, kola puresi. 8

Salutations to Mahalakshmi, who is Goddess of Kolapura Who holds in her arm the holy conch and the holy wheel, Who by her hand removes fear and fulfills desires, Who is the holy mother who sits on the lotus pose, Who is the colour of the gold and is merciful to her devotees. Idham stotra rathnm krutham sarva devair, Hrudhithwam samadhayalakshmyashtakam ya, Paden nithya meva vraja yaga lakshmim, Sa Vidhyamcha sathyam bhavathya prasadath. 9 After learning this gem of the prayer by the devas, And fixing the mind on this octet on Lakshmi, And reciting them in the holy temple of Lakshmi, Would bless one with education, without any doubt.

Mooka Pancha Sati - Arya Satakam
By Mooka Kavi Translated by P. R. Ramachander ["There are no authentic proof available on the date and life of Mooka Kavi. There lived a man in Kanchipuram, who was speech impaired from birth. He was regularly visiting kAmAkshi temple and was prostrating before the goddess. One day he saw the lips of the goddess and after that he started to speak and wrote a work called Mooka Pancha Sati or five hundred slokas in praise of the goddess. The word mooka means a person who cannot speak in Sanskrit, hence his name remained as mooka kavi. This mooka kavi was one of the Acharyas of the kAnchI kAmakotI peetam and was called as mooka sankara. The date of his becoming the AchArya is approximately stated as 398 A.D. and he attained siddhi at 437 A.D. His work 'mooka panca sati' has five sections; they are, AryA satakam, pAdAravinda satakam, manda smita satakam, katAksha satakam and stuti satakam. Each section consists of hundred slokas. The metre or the vrittam in which these slokas were written is different in each section. In this text, the poet describes goddess kAmAkshi, kAmakoti peetam, EkamranAtha, kAnchIpuram and the river kampA. The 48th sloka of this great work is supposed to be very dear to Paramachaya of Kanchi. Here is a feeble attempt to translate the first chapter called "Arya satakam" of this great work. I have referred to the scholarly book in Tamil by Smt.Lakshmi Halasyam. Many thanks for her.] 1. Karana para chidroopaa, Kanchi puraseemni, Kama peeta gatha, Kachana viharathi karunaa Kasmeera sthabhaka Komalangalatha. She who is the divine cause of creation, who sits in the Kama Peeta in Kanchi, Makes her divine presence like the Saffron which is a tender pretty climber 2. Kanchana Kanchi nilayam, kara dhrutha kodanda bana sruni paasam, Katina sthana bhara namram Kaivalya aananda kanda mavalambe. I seek and depend on that root of the eternal source of Joy, Who makes Kanchi her place, and holds bow, arrow, noose and goad,

And whose form body is slightly bent due to her heavy breasts. 3. Chinthitha phala pari poshana chinthamani reeya Kanchi nilayaa may, Chira thara sucharitha sulabhaa, chitham sisirayathu chith sukhaa dharaa. My mind is made cool by the rain of divine joy by her, Who is the Chinthamani who fulfills all the desires, Who lives in Kanchi and who can be easily attained by good conduct. 4. Kutila kacham, katina kucham, kunda smitha kanthi, kunkuma chayam, Kuruthe vihruthim kanchyaam kula parvatha saarva bhouma sarvaswam. She who is everything of the great mountain, and lives in Kanchi, And has curled hair, hard breasts, jasmine like teeth and saffron colour. 5. Pancha sara sashtra bodhana paramacharyena drushti pathena, Kanchi seemni Kumari kachana mohayathi Kama jetharam. The maiden who lives in Kanchi makes Lord Shiva, Who was victorious against the God of love passionate, With her mere glance teaches the essence love, To the great teacher of the science of five flower* arrows. *Lotus, Ashoka, Mango, Jasmine and Blue hued water lilli 6. Paraya, Kanchi paraya parvatha paryaya peena kucha bharaya, Para thanthra vayamanaya pankaja sa Brahmachari lochanayaa. The great lady who stays in Kanchi who has mountain like breasts, And who has lotus like eyes , has enslaved our minds. 7. Aiswarayamindu moule aikathmya prakruthi Kanchi madhya gatham, Aindhava kisora shekharam aidamparya chakrasthi nigamaanam. She who is in the middle of Kanchi, which is one with Brahmam, Existing along with Shiva with the moon is the wealth and iis the purport of Vedas. 8. Sritha kampasi maanam shidhiltha parama shiva dhairya mahi maanam, Kalaye patalimaanam kanchana kanchukitha bhuvana bhoomaanam. Sitting on the banks of the torrential Kampa river, the form with red colour, Has the fame of shattering the mental resolve of Lord Shiva, And again giving life to God of love whom Shiva burnt, So that this world would continue to live. 9. Aadrutha Kanchi nilayam aadhyaam aarooda youvana topaam, Aagama vathamsa kalikam, aananda adwaitha kandhalim vande. I bow to the non dual joy who is like the red Kandhali flower, Who resides in the venerable town of Kanchipuram, Who is filled with the ascending pride of youth, And who is the bud of Vedas called Upanishads.

10. Thungabhirama kucha bhara srungareetham aasrayami Kanchi gatham, Ganga dhara para thanthram srungara advaitha thanthra sidhantham. I surrender to the ever pretty lady of Kanchi, Who entertains with her elevated completely filled breasts, The God who carries Ganges, Who is the divine special knowledge of, The non dual sentiment of erotic knowledge. 11. Kanchi rathna vibhooshaam kaamapi kandharpa soothikaa pangim, Paramaam kala mupase para shiva vamanga peetikaaseenaam. I meditate on the divine Kala, who is the crown jewel of Kanchi, Who sits on the left side of Lord Paramashiva, And who revives Manmatha, the God of love by her glance. 12. Kampathi charaanaam karunaa kora kitha drushtipathaanaam, Keli vanam mano may kesham chid bhavathu chidvilasanaam. May mind become the divine play Ground of the divine play of her, Who roams about in the banks of Kampa, And who lets down mercy fall from her eyes. 13. AAmra tharu moola vasathe aadhimapurushasya nayana peeyusham, Aarabdha youvanothsavam aamnaaya Rahasya manthravalambe. I meditate using the Sri Vidhya tradition of worship on her, Who sits below three of mango, Who is the nectar to the eye of Shiva who is primeval, By the festival her budding youthfulness. 14. Aadhi Kanchi parama yogibhir aadhima para peeta simni drusyena, Anubadham mama maanasam arunima sarvaswa sampradhayena. My mind is tied firmly by rituals observed as well as the redness of her, Who was seen by the great divine Yogis of the ancient Kanchi, Occupying the most ancient peeta* which was existing there. Kama Koti Peeta of Kanchi. 15. Ankitha shankara dehaam ankuritho roja kankana sleshai, Adhi Kanchi nithya tharuneem adraksham kaanchid adbuthaam Balaam. That wonderful Balaa Devi of ancient Kanchi who is forever youthful, Embraced the body of Shankara made out of sand and left on him, Marks of her bangles and her breasts. (When Goddess was worshipping God in the form of a sand Linga, God made the river Kampa overflow. The goddess to protect the Linga embraced it tightly leaving marks on the Linga) 16. Madhura dhanushaa mahi dhara janushaa nandhaami surabhi bana jushaa, Chid vapushaa Kanchipure Keli jushaa Bandhu jeeva kanthimushaa. A red light has risen over the mountains, which is redder than the hibiscus,

And has a bow made of sugarcane and arrow of flowers and has divine form. 17. Madhura smithena ramathe, Mamsala kucha bhara mandha gamanena, Madhye Kanchi mano may manasija samrajya Garbha bheejena. Enjoying the sweet smile and walking, slowly due to the fleshy heavy breasts, In the middle of Kanchi she has put the seed of pride in the mind of God of love. 18. Dharanee mayim tharani mayim pavana mayim gagana dhahana hethru mayim, Ambumayim, Indumayim Ambaam anukampaam aadhimaam eekshe. I see on the banks of my mother Amba, Who manifests herself as Earth, Sun, Air, Sky, fire, The one who does fire sacrifice, Water and the moon. 19. Leena sthithi Muni hrudhaye dhyana sthithi mitham thapasya dhupa kampam, Peena sthana bhara meede meena dhwaja thanthra parama thathparyam. The goddess who lives hidden in the caves of the hearts of the sages, Is doing penance on the shores of Kampa river along with heavy breasts, Filled with the milk of wisdom and is the ultimate meaning of the God with Fish flag.* *God of love Manmatha is supposed to have a fish flag. 20. Swethaa mandhara hasithe saathaa madhye cha Vang mano atheethaa, Sheethaa lochana pathe sphithaa kucha seemni saswathi mathhaa. With white colour, sparkling smile, with thin his, With her beyond words and thought, With cooling eyes and very heavy breast, she is the permanent mother of all. 21. Puratha kadha nu kara vai pura vairi vimardha pulakithanga lathaam, Punathim Kanchi desam pushpa aayudh veerya sarasa pari paatim. When will I ever have the divine vision of her, Who is the tender climber tightly embraced, With extreme emotions by Lord Shiva, the enemy of cities, Who makes Kanchi as sacred, And who is amenable to the flower arrows of God of love. 22. Punyaa kaapi purandhri punghitha kandharpa sampadhaa vapushaa, Pulinachari Kampaaya pura madhanam pulaka nichulitham kuruthe. The blessed pretty Goddess adorned with lotus flowers, Blessed with the wealth of flower arrows of Manmatha, Is roaming on the sand banks of the river Kampa, Makes the God shiva drunk with passion. 23. Thanimadvaitha valagnam tharunaa aruna sampradhayatha anulekham, Thata seemini Kampayaa tharunima sarvaswam aadhyam adraksham. I have seen the matchless goddess with a thin waist in the banks of river Kampa, Who is full of youth and is of the reddish colour of the rising Sun.

24. Poushtika karma vipaakam Poushpa saram savidasimni Kampaya, Adraksham aatha youvanam abhyudhayam Kanchi dardasasimoulou. In the land bounded by river Kampa, with the flower arrow, the God of love, Promotes the growth and fortune of the Lord with the crown of rising young moon. 25. Samsritha Kanchi dese sarasija dourbhagya jagard uthamse, SAmvinmae vileeye saaraswatha purushakara samrajye. In the divine kingdom of knowledge called Kanchi, I become one with her, Who adorns herself with moon which unfortunately wilts the Lotus. 26. Modhitha Madhu kara vishikham swadhima samudhaya sara kodandam, Adhrutha Kanchi kelanm aadhimam aarunya bhedhamaakalaye. I do not move away from the primeval goddess with the red tint, Whose bow is the essence of sweetness and whose arrows are Honey bees, And who engages herself in playing in Kanchi. 27. Uraree kutha Kanchi pureem Upanishad aravinda kuhara Madhu dharam, Unnamrastha kalaseemuthsava laharimupasmahe Shambho. The lady of Kanchi is the flow of Honey from the core of the lotus, which are Upanishads, due to her pot like high breasts, Is the source of the waves of joy of Lord Shambhu and we worship her. 28. Yena sisy deerga lochanam yena paripandhi santhatham namathaam, Yekamra nadha jeevitham yevam pada dooramekam aavalambhe. I totally depend on the goddess, who has long eyes like that of a doe, Who stops the bad effects of those devotees who always salute her, Who is the life breath of the God Elambara Natha. 29. Smayamana mukham Kanchi maya maanam kamapi devathaa bedham, Dhayamanam Veekshya muhurvaya mananda amrudhambhudhou magnaa. I get drowned in the sea of the nectar of joy when I see her soft smiling face, Oh her whose divinity completely engulfs the city of Kanchi, when she looks at it with mercy. 30. Kuthuka jushi Kanchi dese kumudha thapo rasi paka shekharithe, Kuruthe mano vihaaram kula giri paribruda kulaika mani dheepe. My mind is full with her who is fond of Kanchi, Who wears that which make the night lilies happy, Who makes the mind of great mountain happy, And shines like a jeweled and noble lamp, 31. Veekshe mahi Kanchi pure, vipula sthana kalasa garima paravasitham, Vidhruma saha chara deham vibhrama samavaaya sara samnaham. I see in city of Kanchi the goddess with heavy pot like breasts,

Which makes her body bent slightly, Who has the colour of corals, Who is exuberant in her youth and is ready for love making. 32. Kuruvinda gothra mathram koolacharam kamapi naumikampaayaa, Koolangasha kucha kumbham kusumayudha veerya sara samrambham. I bow to her who is like the huge collection of shining rubies, Who keeps wandering on the shores of the river Kampa, Whose perfect pot like breasts which rub against each other, And is engaged in the wat of the God with flower as weapon. 33. Kudmalitha kucha kisorai kurvanai Kanchi desa souhardham, Kunkuma sonair nichitham kusala padham shambhu sukrutha sambharai. We are bound to the Goddess who is very dear to Kanchi, Who has breasts like the just opening flower buds, Who is of the crimson colour of the saffron powder, Who has a friendly step and is the collection of luck of God Shiva. 34. Ankitha kachena kena chidandhangarana oushadhena kamalaanaam, Antha purena Shambhoa alankriya kaapi kalpyathe kanchyaam. That Goddess is the one shining in the heart of Lord Shiva, Who decorates his head with moon who makes her lotus like face shy, And who also beautifies the great city of Kanchi. 35. Oori karomi santhatha mooshmala phaalena laalitham pumsaa, Upakampa muchitha khelanam oorvadhara vamsa sampad unmesham. I always meditate the goddess who caresses the God with the hot* forehead, Who is the tender offspring and fortune of the king of mountains. * Hot because the third eye on his forehead is full of fire. 36. Ankuritha sthana korakam angalankaram eka chootha pathe, Aloka mahi komalam aagama samlapasarayadharthayam. She who has nipples like the newly germinating buds, And sitting on the left thigh of lord of one mango, And is filled with the core meaning of the Vedas, Is being seen by me as personification of great beauty. 37. Punchitha karunaa mudanchitha, sinchutha mani Kanchi kimapi kanchipure, Manchareetha mrudhula haasam pinchara thanu ruchi pinaki moola dhanam. She who is beyond description shines in the city of Kanchi, With compassion along with the bells of her hip belt tingling, And she also has a tender smile similar to flower blossoms, And with these her pretty tender form is the treasure of Lord Shiva. 38. Lola hrudayosmi Shambho lochana yugalena lehyamaanaayaam, Laalitha paramashivaayaam lavanyaa amrutha tharanga maalaayaam.

Lord shiva with a heart made tender with love, Is making the Lalitha Parameshwari, Who is the wave of nectar of prettiness, As a feast to both of his eyes. 39. Madhu kara sahachara chikurai madanaagama samaya dheekshaa kadakshai, Manditha kampaa theerai mangala kandhairmaasthu saaroopyam. Let me be completely become one with that Goddess, Who has braids of curly hair resembling the bees, Whose passionate eyes are the lessons for the God of love, And who illuminates the shores of river Kampa. 40. Vadanaravinda vaksho vamanga thatee vasam vadhee bhootha, Purushatrithaye thredhaa purandhri roppaa thwameva Kamakshi. Living in the face of Lord Brahma, on the chest of Vishnu and left side of Shiva, As their respective virtuous consorts in your three forms, You are Goddess Kamakshi. 41. Bhaadhaa karim bhavabdhe aadhara dhyambujeshu vicharantheem, AAdharee krutha kancheem bodhamrutha veecheemeva vimrusaam. Let me think of that wave of knowledge which travels from mooladhara to Sahasrara, Who removes the pains of worldly life, Who has made the city of Kanchi as her foundation. 42. Kalayamyantha sasa dhara kalayankitha moulim amala chid valayaam, Alayaam aagama peeta nilayam valayanga sundharim Ambaam. I cherish the pretty mother who is adorned with bracelets, Who wears the moon and hare as her head gear, Whose is surrounded by pure divine aura, And who is the ultimate and seated on the Vedas. 43. Sarvaadhi parama sadhaka gurvaaneethaya kama peeta jushe, Sarvaa krythaye sonima garvaaya samarpyathe hrudayam. With extreme pride I submit my heart to the red shaded goddess, Who has been invited and lead by great devotees like Paramashiva, With an intention of enthroning her in Kama Peeta. 44. Samayaa saandhyama yukhia, samayaa budhyaa sadaiva sheelathayaa, Umayaa Kanchi rathayaa na mayaa labhyetha kim nu thadhathmyam. Will I ever be able to become one with that Goddess, Who shines purple like the twilight sun, Who is meditated by people with ever stable mind, And who is desirous of living in Kanchi. 45. Janthothsava pada poojana santhosha ragithasya kamakshi, Bandho yaadhi bhavathi puna sindhorambhasu babrameethi shilaa.

Oh Kamakshi, In case the one who worships your feet, And get immersed in the divine joy because of that, Is bound by the chains of the domestic like again, Then a stone would float in the sea. 46. Kundali Kumaari Kutile Chandi Chara chara savithriChamunde, Guninee Guhaarini guhye Guru murthe thwam namami Kamakshi. I salute you Kamakshi, the goddess who wears ear studs, who is a lass as Bala, Who is the Pranava "Om", Who is the one who killed Chanda, Who is the Savithri who is behind mobile and immobile objects, Who is the kiler of Chanda and Munda, Who has all the good properties, Who lives in the cave of our mind and is secret and not visible And who is the ultimate teacher. 47. Abhidha kruthlr bhidha kruthir, achidhakruthir api chida kruthir matha, Anahantha thwamahantha bramayasi Kamakshi saswathi viswam. Oh Kamakshi who is the only stable aspect in this world, You have both differing forms as well as a stable form, You are the divine form as well as well as the realistic form, And you are one who is beyond ego and the real supreme self. 48. Shiva shiva pasyanthi samam Sri Kamakskshi kadakshitha purusahaa, Vipinam bhavana mithram loshtam cha yuvathi bimbhoshtam. The man who is glanced by Kamakshi sees Shiva in everything, Be it in a palace, friend, enemy, clay or the red lips of a lass. 49. Kama pari pandhi kamini Kameswari Kama peeta madhya gathe, Kamadughaa bhava kamale Kamakale kama koti kamakshi. Kamakshi who is in the centre of the Kama koti peeta, Is the goddess of love who is the consort of he who killed the god of love, And she is the faboulous wish giving cow who fulfills all our desires. 50. Madhye hrudayam madhye nitilam madhye siro aapi vasthavyam, Chanda kara sakra karmuka chandra samaabhaam namami kamakshim. I salute Goddess Kamakshi who shines like the Sun god in the heart, As the bow of Indra on the forehead and as moon on the head, And I prostrate before her who like moon provides light for everyone. 51. Adhikanchi keli lolai akhilaagama yanthra manthra thanthra mayai,. Athi seetham mama maanasam sasama saradrohi jeevanopayai She is the essence of Vedas, Yanthras, Manthras and Thanthras, She loves to be engaged in playing in the great city of Kanchi, She cools my mind fast and is the soul of Lord Shiva, the enemy of God of love. 52. Nandhathi mama hrudhi kaachana mandhirayanthi nirantharam Kanchim,

Indhu ravi mandala kuchaa bindu viyan nnadha parinatha tharuni. Seated in my heart is the lass, who has chosen Kanchi as her permanent abode, Who has sun and the moon as her breasts And who appears also as atom, space and sound. 53. Sampa latha savarnam sampaadayithum bhava jwara chikithsam, Limpaami manasi kinchana kampathata rohi sidha baishajyam. I would earn the medicine for the disease of life, By always applying in my mind the medicine From the golden lightning like climber Which is available in the banks of river Kampa. 54. Anumitha kucha katinyaam adhi vaksha peetam anga janma ripo, Anandhadhaam bhaje Aananga brahma Thathwa botha siraam. I worship her, who teaches Lord Shiva the philosophy of love of the love god, Who becomes overjoyed by the hardness of her breasts which can only be guessed. 55. Iykshishi pasangusa dhara hathanthaam, vismayarha vruthaanthaam, Adhi Kanchi nigama vaachaam sidhantham soola pani shuddhanthaam. Holding the bow, arrow rope and goad and having a very wonderful story, She who is the conclusion of all Vedas is seen in Kanchi, As the supreme consort of that Lord who holds the trident. 56. Aahitha vilasa bangeem Aabrahma sthambha shilpas kalpanaya, Aasritha Kanchim athulaam aadhyaam visphoorthi maadriye vidhyaam. I depend on her, whose beautiful undulating wave of handwork, Of imagination spreads from a tiny worm to Lord Brahma, Who is incomparable, primeval and preeminent form of knowledge. 57. Kim vaa phalathi mamanyai, bimbadara chumbi manda hasa mukhi, Sambhadhakari thamasaam Ambaa jagarthimanasi Kamakshi. What are the use of other things to me, when Kamakshi, Who with her smiling face and red lips like Bimba fruit, Is obstructing the darkness of ignorance and is awakening my mind. 70. Manche sadaa shiva maye, para shiva maya lalitha poushpa paryange, Adhi chakra madhyamaasthe Kamakshi naama kimapi mama bhagyam. You are pure, live in a lotus flower, hold book, Rudaraksha in her opened arms, You are Kamakshi, have thick eye lashes, holds the Veena called Vipanchi, You are shining and are the consort of Lord Brahma. 93. Kunkuma ruche pingam asruk pangila mundaali manditham maathaa, Jayathi thava roopadheyam japa patas pusthaka varaa abhaya karabhjam. [Garland of prayers to the Goddess of all Arts] By Swamy Kumaraguruparar Translated by P. R. Ramachander [Here is a great prayer addressed to Saraswathi, the goddess of learning. It is composed by the great saint Kumara Guru Parar, of the Tamil Saivite tradition. In his quest to popularize the great philosophical implications of Tamil Saivism, this saint reached Benares. To establish an Ashram there as well as to look after the great Kedareswarar temple in Benares, he had to talk to Dara, the moghul prince. It seems he sung this great prayer addressed to Goddess Saraswathi and went to meet Dara on a lion. He ultimately got what he wanted and the ashram he established still manages the great Kedareswarar temple in Benares. [The Eight Names of Sankata Devi] Translated by P. R. Ramachander Sankata Devi is known in Kashi as one of the most powerful deities in the entire city. Sankata Ji as she is called, is located high above the Sankata Ghat in the labyrinthine lanes of the city. Sankata Devi means Goddess of Dangers, for she is the one who vanquishes dangers for her devotees. Sankata Devi was originally a Matrika, one of the mothers. In Puranic Stories she is called Vikat Matrika, the Fierce Mother. Sankata Devi is a selfmanifested goddess and has ten hands. She is believed to have the power to protect far away husbands and to ensure their safe return and so her temple in Banaras became an important pilgrimage site during the peak period of colonial migration. This great stotra is occurs in Padma Purana. Hearing these words Narada with a mind ful of joy, Worshipped the Devi along with Lord Shiva, Who had ten hands and three eyes. Having a garland, pot, lotus conch and mace in her hands, Having Trident drum sword and skin in her hands, One hand showing blessing was saluted by the son of Brahma, He stayed for three weeks and went back to the abode of Hari. Kadambaatavi madhye samshthaam sakheebhir-, Manognaabhi rananda leelaa rasabhi, Kalaswanaya veenaya raajamanam, Bhaje thwam saraswathyaham devi nithyam. 12 I daily sing about you, Oh Goddess Saraswathi, Who is surrounded by her pretty friends In the Kadamba forest and enjoys enchanting joy. And shines playing Veena which gives out sweet music. Sudhaa poorna hairanya kumbhabhisheka, Priye bhaktha loka priye poojaneeye,

Sanadhabhir yogineebhir-, Jjaganmathasmanmana shodhaya thwam. 13 Please make my mind clean and pure, Oh Goddess, Who likes anointing with nectar filled in a golden pot, Who likes her devotees, who is fit to be worshipped, And who is being worshipped by yogis like Sananda. Avidhyanthakarougha marthanda deepthyai, Suvidhyaa pradhanothsukayai shivayai, SAmasthartha raksha karaayai varayai, Samsthambhike devi, thubhyam namosthu. 14 My salutations to you, who is the Goddess for all, Who is like a Sun to the darkness of ignorance, Who is the Shivaa, interested in giving good knowledge, And who is the blessed one interested in protecting the oppressed. Pare nirmale nishkale, nithya shudhe, Saranye varenye trayeemayyananthe, Namosthwambike yushma dheeyangri padme, Rasagnathale santhatham nruthyathaam may. 15 I salute the lotus like feet of the great goddess, Who is pure, without stains and ever clean, Who is the protector, who blesses and has no end, And pray her to always dance on the tip of my toungue. Praseeda, praseeda praseedambike maa-, Ma seemanu dheenanukambavaloke, Padaamboruha dwandwamekawalambam, Na jane param kinchid aananda moorthe. 16 Show your kindness, show your kindness, oh mother goddess, Who has limitless pity on the oppressed and downtrodden, For my only support in this world is your two lotus like feet, And of personification of joy, I do not know any one greater. [The Prayer of the Greatness of Shakthi] By Sage Durvasa Translated by P. R. Ramachander [Sage Durvasa was the son of Sage Athri and his wife Anasooya. His brothers are sage Dathathreya and Soma. It seems once Lord Shiva was so angry that no body dared to approach him. At that time Goddess Parvathi told him durvasam Bhavathi may meaning, I am not able to live happily with you. Lord Shiva realized his mistake and took out all the anger from himself and placed it in the womb of Anasuya. The child born later to her was the very short tempered saint Durvasa. He is also called Krodha Bhattagara (personification of anger). People believe that Sage Durvasa consecrated the Kamakshi at Kanchipuram. He is the author of two great books viz Arya dwisathi and Shakthi Mahimna stotra. The later is similar to Adhi Shankara's Soundarya Lahari in the sense that both deal with the power of Goddess Parvathi and both have two parts, the first part being philosophy of Shakthi and the second, the poetic description of Goddess Parvathi. In Shakthi Mahimna Stotra there are 61 slokas. The first part deals with Kundalini, meditation techniques, meaning and symbolism of several aspects of Shakthi worship and the second part is a very poetic description of Goddess Shakthi. Srimaatha sthripure parathpare devi trilokeemahaa, Soundaryarnava mandhanoth bhava sudhaa prachurya varnojjwalam, Udhyathbhanu sahasra noothana japa pushpa prabham they vapu, Swanthe may trikona nilayam jyothirmay am vangmayam. 2 Oh mother, who lives in the three cities, and who is holier then the holiest, May your form which is splendorous and which is the form of the words, And which is the nectar obtained by churning the sea of beauty of the world, Which is as brilliant as the rising sun and the newly opened cotton flower, And which exists in the place shaped like a triangle, clearly shine in my mind. AAdhikshantha samastha varna sumani prothe vithanaprame, Brahmadhi prathimaabhikeelitha shadatharabhja kakshonnathe, Brahmandabhja mahamane janani they moorthim bhaje chinmayeem, Soushumnayatha peethapankaja maha Madhya trikona sthithaam. 3 I meditate on your holy form, which shines being decorated, By the gems of all alphabets and which is far above the six wheels*, That are decorated by the forms of Lord Brahma and other gods, And which is in the yellow lotus flowering in the Sushmna, Which itself is in the middle of the lotus of universe of Brahma. *The six wheels are Mooladhara, Swadhishtana, Manipooraka, anahatha, Vishudhi and Agna. I pray in my heart always for fulfilling all my desires to that Goddess, Who is very sweet with the young moon and Sun as her eyes, Who sits on the red lotus, who is like a climber decorated by red gems, Who has a face like the full moon, who holds garland of beads, Goad, rope and book in her hands, who shines like the rising sun, And who is the consort of Shiva and who stays in the three cities. Vande vagbhava maindavathma sadrusam Vedadi vidhyaa giro, Bhashaa desa samudhbhavaapasu gathaschandaamsi saptha swaraan, Thaalaan pancha maha dwaneen prakatayathyathma prakaasena yath, Thatdwijam padavakya mana janakam Sri mathruke they param. 5 Oh goddess who is like a mother, I salute your Vagbhava bheeja, Which is very similar to the nectar flowing out of the moon, And which makes clear due to its glittering power,the Vedas, Knowledge, Words, languages which have arisen in different places, And Which are common among animals, meters, the seven musical notes, The beats and the sound from five great percussion instruments And which produces from within itself words, sentences and grammar. Trilokyasphuta manthra thanthra mahimaa swathmokthi roopam vinaa, Yadwijam vyavahara jala makhilam nasthyeya mathasthava, Thajjaphya smarana prasaktha sumathi sarvagnatham praapya ka, Sabdha brahma nivasa bhootha vadano nendardhhibhi spardhathe. 6 Oh mother, without the Vagbhava Bheeja which illustrates your form, The manthras and Thanthras which are famous in all the three worlds, And all the happenings in the entire universe verily cannot exist And would not be that intelligent to the person, Who is interested in chanting and meditating on it, Who has the capability of knowing it fully and who has a face, Which looks like the entrance to the word which is God, And who is the object of great jealousy of Indra and other devas? Mathraa yathra viraajatthe athivishadhaa thaam ashtadhaa mathrukaam, Shakthim kundalineem chathur vidha thanum yas thathwavinmanyathe, Sovidhyakhila janma karma durithaaranyam prabodhagninaa, Bhasmikrutha vikalpajala rahitho matha padam thadwajeth. 7 Oh mother, that seeker of truth who meditates on the aa* of the Vagbhava bheeja, Which becomes in to the fifty one alphabets, which is the form of eight mothers, Which is the four fold power of Kundalini and which would burn with his fire like wisdom, The forest of sins and karmas accumulated by him in several births, And then he would become one without problems and attain the form of perennial bliss. Thathe madhyama bheeja mamba kalayam aadhithya varnam kriyaa, Gnechchadhi manantha shakthi vibhva vyakthim vyanakthi sphutam, Uthpathi sthithi kalpa kalpitha thanu swathma prabhavena yath, Kaamyam Brahma hareeswaraadhi vibhudhai kamam kriya yojithai. 8 Oh holy mother, I praise the middle seed of yours, which is of the colour of Sun,

Which is the cause for action, wisdom and desire and which clearly brings out, The cause of the greatness of your immeasurable power, And which is worshipped by Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva, Who have been deputed to do the work allotted as per the desire, Of your self to do the acts of creation, upkeep and destruction. Kaamaan Kaaranathaam katthaana kanithaan kaayai rananthair mahi, Mukhyai sarva manogathai rathigathaan manairanekai sphutam, Kama krodha salobha moha mada mathsaryadhi shatkam cha yath, Bheejam brajayathi pranoumi thadaham they sadhu kaameshwari. 9 Hey Kameshwari*, I salute your root chant called Kamaraja which clarifies, That which is known by the mind of Brahma and other devas, And earth and other elements, by the mental process of every one, By the axioms known as Shruthi and Smruthi and which clearly brings out, The desires which are the reason for worldly acts and which even brings out, The baser instincts like desire, anger, miserliness, passion, pride and jealousy. *The goddess of desire (passion) Yad bhakthakhila kama poorana chana swathma prabhaavaam mahaa-, JJadyadwandha vidharanaika tharani jyothi prabodhapradham, Yadhwaddeshu cha geeyathe sruthimukham mathra thryenomithi, Sri vidhye thava sarva raja vasakruth thath kamarajam Bhaje. 10 Oh Goddess Srividya, I meditate on the Kamaraja bheeja, Which has its own capacity to satisfy all the wishes of devotees, Which is the consciousness of wisdom which like the great light of Sun, Can remove the very great darkness of ignorance, Which with its three syllables starting with the letter Om, Is being sung in the beginning of Vedas, And which is capable of attracting even people like kings. Yathe devi tritheeya bheeja manila jwalaavalee sannibham, Sarvaadhaaraa thureeyabheeja mapara brahmabhidhaasabdhidham, Moordhanyaantha visarga bhooshitha mahoukaarathmakaam thathparam, Sarvidroopamanya thulya mahima swanthe mama dhyothathaam. 11 Oh Goddess, Let my mind be enlightened by the third seed *, Which is considered as the seed of Thureeya which is the basis of all, Which is termed as greater than Para Brahma, the ultimate truth, Which is ornamented by sa which is the end of sha added with Ow, Which is having the incomparably great form of Ou, having great fame, And having the brilliance of crowds of the flames of great fire, the letter sow which is the seed of power (Shakthi Bheeja) Sarva sarvatha yeva sarga samaye karyeenyantharaa, Thatha divya hrusheeka karmabhiriyam samvyasruvaanaa paraa, Chakardha vyavahaara karana thanu shakthir jagad roopini, Yad bheejathmagathaam gatha thava shive thannoumi bheejam param. 12 I salute the divine seed (Para Bheeja) which is like the seed of the entire world, Which created everything in all forms at the start of creation,

And in between created the organs of karma as well as wisdom, Which is of the form of the meaning of words and cause of everything, And which is the great power which is the cause of the universe. *Para Bheeja is the divine seed is same as Shakthi Bheeja Agneendhu dhyumani prabhanjana dharaa neeranthara sthayenee, Shakthir brahma hareesa vasava mukhaa marthyaa surathma sthithaa, Srushta sthavara jangama sthitha mahaa chaithanya roopaa cha yaa, Yad bheeja smaranena saiva bhavatheepradhurbhavathyambike. 13 Oh mother, you are experienced by meditating on the Para seed power, You are the power in the fire, moon, sun, wind, earth, water and ether, And you are the innate divine energy of devas like Brahma, Vishnu, Rudra, Indra, As well as all asuras and created beings which are mobile as well as immobile, Swathma sri vijithaja Vishnu maghava sri pooranaikavrutha, Sadvidhyaa kavithaa vilasa llahari kallolini deepakam, Bheeja yath tri guna pravruthi janakam brahmedhi yad yogina, Santhaa sathya mupaasathe thadhiha they chithe dhadhe sripare. 14 Oh Goddess of the Srividya, I meditate on that seed letter sou, Which has taken on itself the duty of filling its devotees with its innate wealth, That easily is greater than the wealth of Brahma, Vishnu, Indra and other devas, Which grants the power of true knowledge and the stream power of writing poems, Which grants the power of the three qualities and is the object of meditation of peace loving yogis. Yekaikam thava mathruke paratharam samyogi vaayogi vaa, Vidhyadhi prakata prabhava janakam jadyanthakarapaham, Yannishtascha mahothpalasana maha Vishnu praharthradhayo, Devaa sweshu vidhishwanantha mahima spoorthim dhadhatyeva thath. 15 Oh mother, though each of the chants that please you are made by vowels, This three syllable chant which does not have any composition of vowels, Generates all types of effective knowledge and is the dispeller of the darkness of ignorance, And Brahma sitting on lotus, Lord Vishnu and the lord of destruction, the Rudra, Meditate on this chant and are definitely getting the great power to do their duties. Itham threenyapi moola vagbhava maha sri kama raja sphura-, Chakthyagni chathu sruthi prakatithanyuthkrushta kootani they, Bhootharthu sruthi sankhya varna vidhithanya raktha kanthe Shive, Yo jaanaathi sa yeva sarva jagatham srushti sthithi dwamsakruth. 16 Oh Goddess Shivaa, who is the red colour of the rising sun, The three syllables thus far told as well as the chief chants of, Vag bhava, Maha Kama Raja and the very effective Shakthi, Which originated from the four Vedas and is a three staged one, Which is well known with five, six and four syllables, If known by a person makes him capable of creation, upkeep and destruction. Brahma yoni rama sureshwara surul lekhopi rukthai sthatha, Marthandendu manoja hamsa vasudhaa, mayaabhi rutha sidhai, Somambhu kshithi shakthibhi prakatithair bananga vedhai kramath,

Varnai srri shiva desikena vidhithaam vidhyaam thavabhasraye. 17 Oh mother, told by ka, ye, cha,la and hreem, And especially by sa, ka, ha, il and hreem, And further revealed by sa, ka, ye and hreem Which has five, six and four syllables respectively, And known by the world teacher Lord Shiva. Is my ultimate point of surrender. (The words indicate the syllables and have been taken by the book in Tamil by Anna) Nithyam yasthava mathrukakshara sakheem soubhaghya vidhyaam japeth, Sampoojyakhila chakra raja nilayam sayam thanagni prabham, Kamaakhyaam shiva nama thathwamubhayam vyapyathmanaa sarvatho, Dheevyanthi miha thasya sidhi rachirath syath thwathswa roopaikathaa. 18 He who worships you,as being in the Sri chakra, which is the world, As some one who has the colour of the raging fire of the evenings, And as some one who pervades fully the god described as Kama, And the principle of Shivaa completely with her lustrous form, And also chants your Soubhagya chant* using the chain of beads**, Would soon become one with your great form. * Iym-ka a ee la hreem Kleem-ha sa ka ha la hreem Sou-sa ka la hreem. ** The chain has 51 beads representing 51 alphabets beginning from Aa to Ksha.The Ksha bead is not used for counting. KavyaiRva padithai kimalpa vidhushaam jogushya mania puna, Kim thai vyakarair vibho bhudhishaya kim vabhidhana sriya, Yethairambha na bhobaveethi sukavi sthaavathava srimatho, Yavathannu sari sareethi saraneem padabhjayo pavaneem. 19 What is the use of reading epics and for those less wise, What is the use of Grammer, which is being announced, And what is the use of skill of oration, till one follows, The holy path shown by your lotus like feet, Because one does not posses the poetic skill till then. Geham nakathi garvitha pravanathi stri sangamo mokshathe, Dweshee mithrathi patakam sukruthathi thwath pada samsevanaath, Mruthyur vaidhyathi dhooshanam sugunathi thwath pada samsevanaath, Thwam vandhe bhava bheethi bhanjana kareem goureem gireesa priyaam. 20 By the service done to your feet, our home becomes like a heaven, The proud one will salute us and making of love would take one to heaven, The enemy will become one's friend and great sins would become blessed acts, Lord Vishnu would become one's slave and Lord of death will become one's doctor, Demeaning words would become praise and so I salute you, Who removes the fear of birth and is Gowri, the wife of the lord of mountain. Aadhyai ragni raveendu bhimbha nilayai rambha trilingathmabhir, Misraraktha sitha prabhai ranupamair yushmadpadai sthai sthribhi, Swathmothpadhitha kala loka nigamavasdhamaradhi thrayai, Rudhbhootham nama kalayedhyasthe sa danyo budha. 21

Oh primeval mother, You are called Tripura, Because you were made with the three groups of letters, And also by joining of the fire, Sun and the moon, And also by the three peethas Mooladhara, Swayambhu and Bana, And also by the black, red and white colours, And also by the three incomparable words, And also by time world classified as past, present and future, And also by the three worlds generated by you called earth, patala and Swarga, And also by the three Vedas which are Rik, Yajur and Sama, And by the three states which are awaking, sleeping and dreaming, And also by the three gods who are Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva And if some one tells this name with real devotion, He is the one who has true wealth and true wisdom. Aadhyo jaapyathamartha vachakathaya rooda swara panchamaa, Sarvothkrushtathamartha vachakathaya varna pavarganthaka, Vakthruthwena mahaa vibhoothi saranisthwaadharago hrudhgathe, Brumadhye sthitha ithyatha pranavathaa they geeyathe ambaagamai. 22 Oh mother, the alphabet aa which has the greatest meaning in all that can be chanted, And the alphabet UU which is fifth from it, which also is greatly meaningful, And the alphabet ma* which is the end of the series of pa letters and, Which as the spokesmen leads to very great wealth, and which respectively, Are in the Mooladhara, the heart and between the eyes, Clearly point out that, the Vedas say that the pranava made by these letters is yourself. * Aa+uu+ma= Om Gayathri sashirasthureeya sahitha sandhyaa mayeethyagamai, Rakhyaathaa tripure thwameva mahathaam sarmapradha karmanaam, Thathadarshena mukhya shakthirapi cha thwam brahma karmeshwaree, Kartharhan purusho harischa savithaa budha shivasthwam Guru. 23 Oh Goddess Tripuraa, It has been told hat you are that Gayathri, Which is recited with head chants* and with the fourth part, And which has the form of dusk, as told by the Agamas, And you are the one who blesses with sweet results for rituals, And you are also the strength of each and every divine book, And you are also Brahma, duty, goddess, doer and the receiver, And you are also the Purusha, Vishnu,Surya, Budha, Shiva and Guru. * Om aapo jyotheeraso amrutham brhama bhoorbhuvaswarom. Anna praana mana prabhodha, paramanandhai shira, Paksha yuk, Puchathma prakatai mahoupanishadhaam vaagmi prasidhee kruthai, Kosai panchabhirebhi rambha bhavathi methath praleenamithi, Jyothi prajwala dhujjwalathma chapalaam yo veda sa Brahma vith. 24 Oh mother he is the knower of Brhamam, who understands you as, The light of the soul which shines like the streak of lightning, And which is same as the form revealed by the five kosas, Annamaya, Pranamaya, manomaya, Vignamaya and Anandamaya, And is seen as a form with a head, two wings, tail and a body,

And which has been clearly explained by Upanishad teachings, And which is the truth hidden by the above five kosas. Sachit thathwamaseethi vakya vidhithai radhyatma vidhyaa shiva, Brahmakhyai rakhila prabhava mahithai sthathwai sthribhi Sad guro, Thwad roopasya mukharavina vivaraath samprapya deekshaa matho, Yasthwa vindathi thathwatha sthadaha mithyaarye sa muktho BHaved. 25 Oh lady, he who learns from the lotus like face of his Guru, Who is a form of yours which is the form of the three powerful principles, The knowledge of the great percepts of Soul, knowledge, Vishnu and Brahma, Which is known by the great mantra Sath-Chith-Thath thwam aasi, And surrenders to you knowing that it is in reality you, Attains the great state known as salvation. Sidhanthair bahubhi pramana gadithai ranyai ravidhyathamo, Nakshthrair iva sarva mandha thamasam thavanna nirbhidhyathe, Yavathe savitheva sammathamidham nodhethi viswanthare, Janthor janma vimochanaikabhidhooram Sri Shambhavam Sri Shive. 26 Oh Goddess Shivaa, till the six fold knowledge* of yours, Which is acceptable like the sun to every one and is capable, Of giving salvation from birth to all souls, does not arise in this world, The darkness of ignorance cannot be wiped out by all other principles, Similar to the bevy of stars which are not able to remove darkness of night. * Shambhavi vidhyaa Athamasou sakalendriyasraya mano budhayathibhi shochitha, Karma badha thanur janincha maranam pritheethi yath karanam, Thathe devi maha vilasa lahari divyayudhaanaam jaya, Sthasman sad guru mapyudhebhya kalayethvameva chenmuchyathe, 27 Hey goddess, this soul suffers sorrows due to mind and intelligence, Which are the basic force of all the sense organs and is also tied by Karma, And attains the cycle of birth and death and this is only due to the victory, Of your divine armaments which are the tide of your playfulness, And so if that soul approaches a good guru and sing about you, he would become free. Naanaa yoni sahasra sambhava vasajjathaa jananyakaatha, Prakhyatha janakaa kiyantha ithi may sethsyanthi charge kathi, Yetheshaam gananaiva nasthi mahatha samsara sindhor vidher, Bheetham maam nithara manaya saranam rakshanukamparnidhe. 28 Of treasure of pity, being born out of thousands of wombs in the past, How Many mothers and how many famous fathers do I have? In the future how many more people are going to be added to this? Taking in to account this very numerous number of them, Please save me, who is afraid of this cycle and who does not have any other option. Dehakshobha karair vruthair bahgu vidhai danaischa homair japai, Santhanait hayamedha mukhya sumakhai nana vidhair karmabhi, Yath sankalpa kalpa jala malinam prapyam padam thasya they,

Dhooradeva nivarthathe paratharam matha padam nirmalam. 29 Oh mother, that position which can be attained by constant, Austerity troubling the body, various penances, charities and homas, Various chants, getting children, performing sacrifices like Aswamedha, And various similar acts is tainted by the thoughts desiring fulfillment, But your pure and untainted state is far, far away from that. Panchasannija dehajaksharamayair nana vidhai dhathubhir, Bahvarthai pada vaakya mana janakai rardhavinaa bhavithai, Sabhiprayavadharsha kama phaladhai khyathai rananthairidham, Viswam vyapya chidhatmanaamahamithyujjrumbhase mathruke. 30 Oh mother, using the fifty root letters which arose from you, And using different type of roots several words, sentences, and axioms, And also by using several things which do not change from their import, But have very deep meaning, leading to duties and wealth, You have spread all over the world and are proving, That you and you only, exist every where and in everything. Srichakram sruthi moola kosa ithi they samsara chakrathmakam, Vikhyatham thadhadhishithakshara shiva jyothir mayam sarvatha, Yethan manthramayathmikabhi rarunam sri sundareebhirvrutham, Madhye bhaindhava simha peeda lallithe thwam Brahmavidhya Shive. 31 Oh Goddess Shivaa, It is known that The Srichakra which is in the pattern of the world, Is like the root for the Vedas and is like the heart for the sound Om, And the splendorous light of the chant with fifty five letters, Is everywhere and you with your red colour along with all your ancillary devathas, Are sitting prettily in the center point of it, in your Brahma vidhya form. Bindu prana visarga jeeva sahitham bindu tribheejathmakam, Shatkootaani viparyayena nigadeth tharithra balaaksharai, Yebhi samputitham prajapya vihared prasada manthram param, Guhyad guhya thamam sayoga janitham sad bhoga moksha pradam. 32 The Para prasada Mantra, which is the secret of secrets, And which results in happiness, wealth and salvation, Has Bindu, Prana and Visarga and has three forms, Which when reversed becomes a six part chant, Along with the continuous flowing Bala letters, Which are to be connected at the beginning and at the end*. Sincha noopura pada kankana mahaa mudraa laksha rasaa, Alankrutha pada pankaja yugam sri padu kaalamkrutham, Udbaswan nakha chandra khanda ruchiram rajaj japa sannibham, Brahmaadhi tri dasa surarchitha maham moordhni smaramyambike. 34 Oh mother, I meditate in my head that two lotus like feet of yours, Which are decorated by a pair of holy slippers, Which have ringing anklets, rings to the toes and great mudhras*, Which have decorative red marks made by the juice of lac, Which have nails shining like moon's crescent, Which have the colour of the pretty red hibiscus, And which is worshipped by devas like Brahma and also asuras. *The reference is to a Mudhra called Mrugee Aarakthacha vinathi mardhavayujaa nischaasahaaryena yath, Kouseeyena vichithra sthanaghatithair mukthaphalai rujjwalai, Koojaathkanchana kinkineebhi rabhitha sannaddha kancheegunai, Radheeptham sunithambha bimbha marunam they poojyaam ambike. 35 Oh Mother, I worship your divine hips shining like the sun at dawn, Which is of red colour and is very tender and soft, Which is decorated by the silk cloth which moves in your breath, Which is decorated by a belt having very invaluable gems, And which is tied by a golden chain which makes pleasing sounds. Kasthuri ghanasara kumkumarajo gandhothkatais chandanair, AAliptham mani maalayathiruchiram graiveya haaradhibhi, Deepthamm divya vibhooshanair janani they jyothir vibhaswath kuch, Vyaja swarna ghata dwayam harihara brahmaadhi peetham bhaje. 36 Oh mother, I meditate on those two pots of gold*, Which has been applied with the very perfumed sandal paste, Mixed with the paste of musk, camphor and saffron, Which is beautified by chains of costly gems, Which shines by the chains and other ornaments worn on the neck, And which is drunk by Lord Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma. * breasts of Goddess Muktharathna suvarna kaanthi kalithaisthe bahu valleraham, Keyurothama bahu dhanda valayair hasthangulee bhooshani,

Sampruktha kalayaami heera mani man mukthaapalaakeelitha, Greevaapatta vibhooshanena subhage kantam cha kambhoosriyam. 37 Oh lady who is the seat of all luck, I meditate on your conch like neck, Which is decorated by diamonds and other gems and Which also shines by the garlands and necklaces worn on them, And I also meditate on your hands which are like a climbing plant, Which shines in the splendour of gold, pearls and other gems, And which is decorated by bangles rings over fingers and amulets. Thapthaswarna kruthoru kundala yugam manikhya mukthollasath, Heera bdha mananya thulya maparam haimam cha chakra dwayam, Shukraakaara nikara daksha mukthaphalam sundaram, Vibhrath karna yugam namami lalitham nasagra bhagam, Shive. 38 Oh Mother of peace, I meditate on your two ears, Which is decorated by two big globes made of molten gold, And the invaluable wheel like studs made of gems, pearls and diamonds, And I also meditate on the extremely pretty tip of your nose, Decorated by the pretty pearl which defeats the luster of the planet Venus. Udhyathpoorna kala nidhi sree vadanam bhaktha prasannam sada, SAmphullambhuja pathra chithra sushamaa dhikkara dakshekshanam, Sanandam krutha mandahasa masakruth pradhurbhavath kouthukam, Kundakara sudanha pakthi sashibhaa poorna smaramyambike. 39 Oh Goddess mother, I meditate on your face which shines like moon, Which is pretty like the rising moon complete with all its crescents, Which becomes happy and glowing on seeing your devotees, Which has powerful eyes which can beat the beauty of the just opened lotus petals, Which is full of happiness, and breaks in to soulfully pretty smile, And which has pretty row of teeth, which are as white as jasmine buds. Srungaaraadhi rasalayam tribhuvani maalyai rathulyairyutham, Sarvangeena sadangaraga surabhi ssrimadvapur dheepitham, Thamboolaruna phallavadhara yutham ramyam tripundram dhadhath, Bhalam nandanachandanena janani dhyayami they Mangalam. 40 Oh mother, I meditate on your goody forehead, which has three holy marks made of pleasant sandal paste Which is the storehouse of emotions like love, And which is decorated by garlands, Incomparable and from all the three worlds, And on all parts of your body applied with good sandal paste, And on your lips which are like petals made red by betel leaf,. Jathi champaka kunda kesara maha gandhodhgirathnkethakee, Neepasoka sireesha mukhya kusumai praothamsita dhoopithaa, Anilanjana thulya matha madhoopa sreniva veni thava, Srimatha srayatham madheeya hrudhyambhojaam sarojalaye. 41 Oh mother who resides on the lotus, please make yo your hairs,

With flowers like jasmine, champa and Jathi as well as, The sweet smelling pandanus* flowers with its pollen, And the flowers of Neepa, asoka and siresha plants, With perfume added to it by various types of incense. Which looks like a bevy of stout and very dark black bees, And be always be visible in the lotus like heart of mine. * ketaki Lekhalabhya vichithra rathna ghatitham haimam kiretothamam, Muktha kanchana kinkini gana mahaa heera prabhadhojjwalam, Chamcha chandra kala kalaapa mahitham devadru puspanchithair, Mayai ramba vilambitham sashikaram bibra sirasthe bhaje. 42 Oh mother I meditate on your head bedecked by the crown, Which has various types of gems inlaid in it in rows, Which is decorated by pearls, golden bells, great diamonds, And the dazzling and forever moving crescent like ornament, As well as decorated by garlands made by Devadaru flowers. Uthkshipthocha suvarn danda kalitham poornendu bimba kruthi, Cchathram moukthika chithra rathna kachitham kshmoumamsukothamsitham, Mukthajaalavilambitham sakalasam nana prasoonanchitham, Chanroddamara chamarani dhadhathe Sridevi they swasthriya. 43 Oh Sridevi, your maids are holding to you an umbrella, Which is held high with a long stick made of pure gold, And which has the shape of a full moon and decorated by various gems, Which is made by white silk, with pearl chains hanging all around, And which is prettily decorated by various types of flowers, And also fanning you with white and loftily held fans. Vidhya manthra rahasya vin muni ganai klupthopachara archanaam, Vedaadhi sthuthi geeyamana charitham Vedantha thathwathmikaam, Sarvaastha khalu thuryatha mupagatha sthvadrasmidevya paraa, Sthwaam nithyam samupaasathe swavibhavai Sri Chakra nadhe Shive. 44 Oh Goddess Parvathi who resides in the Sri Chakra, You are being worshipped by great sages who know, The inner meaning of Sri Vidhya mantra in the proper manner, And all the goddesses who are but a ray of your own self, Standing in the great state of Thureeya always and for ever, Are worshipping you,who is praised by the great Vedas, And is the inner meaning of the philosophy of Vedanta. Evam ya smarathi prabudha sumathi srimath swaroopam param, Vrudhopyasu yuva bhavathyanupama sthreenaanam gayathe, So asthaiswarya thirascruthakhila sura sree jrumbanai kaalaya, Pruthwee pala kireeta koti valabhi pushparchithangrir bhaveth. 45 He who is spiritually awake and is of good character, Who meditates on the most holy goddess thus, Would become young even if he is very old,

And would appear like a cupid to all young women, And would be the source of all riches, which are, Greater than the eight riches of all the Gods, And would be worshipped by the flowers, In the top of the crowns of kings who rule the world. Adha thava dhanu pundrekshathwath prasidha mathi dhyuthi, Tribhuvana vadhoo mudhyathjyosna kala nidhi mandalam, Sakala janani smaaram smaaram gatha smaratham nara, Sthree bhuvana vadhoo mohaabodho prapoornavidhur bhaveth. 46 Oh mother of all,meditating without break on Your bow, Which is famous as sugar cane, which is prettier, Than all the prettiness of all the ladies of the world, And which is the seat of the shine of the crescent of rising moon, One would become as pretty as the cupid, the god of love, And would become the full moon attracting the, Passionate sea of all the ladies of the world. Prassona sara panchaka prakata jrummana gumbitham, Triloka mavalokyathya amala chethasaa chanchalam, Asesha tharuni jana smara vijrumbane yaa sadaa, Patur bhavathi they Shive trijagadanganaa kshobhane. 47 Oh Consort of Lord Shiva, he who with a stable and pure mind, Realizes that all the three worlds are only the external manifestation, Of your five arrows, would succeed in making the passion flower, Of all the young ladies of this world, and would be capable, Of passionately upsetting the ladies of all the three worlds. Paasam prapooritha mahaa sumathi prakaso, Yo vaa thava tripurasundari sundareenaam, Aakarshane akhila vaseekaranai praveenam, Chithe dadathi sa jagathraya vasyakruth syath. 48 Oh beauty of the three worlds, he who has the complete wisdom, And meditates on the rope* of yours which has the strength, Of attracting the ladies as well as all the world, Would become capable of attracting all the three worlds. * pasa Ya swanthe kalayathi kovidha sthree loki, Sthambharambhana chana mathyudharya veeryam, Mathasthe vijaya, nijangusam sa yesha, Devasthambhyathi cha bhoo bhujonya sainyam. 49 Oh mother, the learned one,who meditates in his mind your goad, Which is capable of making the three worlds immobile, And which has great valour and results in victory, Would be able to make devas, women, kings and enemy armies immobile. Chapa dhyana vasaad bhavodh bhavamahaa moham maha jrumbanam,

Prakhyatham prasaveshu chithana vasad thathachravyam sudhee, Pasa dhyana vasaad samastha jagatham mruthyor vasathwam mahaa, Durgasthambha mahangusasya mananaan maayaa mameyaam thareth. 50 A practitioner with good wisdom, by meditating on your sugar cane bow, Crosses the famous ever extending illusion of the brain, Which causes the whirl pool of birth and death appear before him, And by meditating on the flower arrows he crosses the bad effect of corresponding arrow, And by meditating on the rope he crosses the fear of death, which is all over, And by meditating on the powerful goad capable of controlling great dangers, He becomes capable of crossing the immeasurable effect of illusion. Kruthwa Ganesa graham bhagana maha yogini rasi peetai, Shadbhi sri mathru karnai sahitha bahu kalai rashta vag devadhabhi, SA sri kandadhi yugmair vimala nija thanou kesavadhyascha thathwai, Shad trimsadbhischa thwair bhagawathi bhvathim ya smareth sa thwameva. 51 Oh Goddess, he who does six type of nyasams called Ganesa, Graha, star, Mahayoginee, rasi and peeta nyasams,does nyasa with mathruka letters, Followed by Vag devatha nyasam with eight different crescents, Followed by two sri kanda nyasams and the usual Kesavadhi nyasams, Followed by the thirty six philosophical nyasams in a pure body, Becomes without any doubt yourself and is yourself. Surapathi pura Lakshmi jrambanaatheetha Lakshmi, Prabhavathi nija gehe yasya daivam thw marye, Thava vividha kalaanaam pathra bhoothasya thasya, Tribhuvana vidhitha sa jrumbathe keerthiracha. 52 Oh Lady, in the house of him for whom you are Goddess, There is wealth which is much more than the city of Indra, And to him who is the seat of different crescents of yourself, The fame which is known in all the three worlds broadens. Mathasthwam bhoorbhuvaswar maha rasi nruthapa sathya lokaischa sooryen, Dwaraagnacharya shukrakibhirabhi nigama brahmabhi protha shakthi, Pranaayaadhi yathnai kalayasi sakalam manasam dhyana yogam, Yesham thesham saparya bhavathi sura krutha brahmathe gnathe cha. 53 Oh mother, you pervade in the bhoo, bhuva, suvar, mahar., jana, thapa and sathya worlds, And the planets Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and the planet Saturn, And also in the Vedas which are the personification of Brahma. The prayer of those who occupy their full mind by pranayama in Dhayana yoga by your blessing, Is equal to the worship offered by Devas and they become equal to Brahma filled with wisdom. Kwa may budhir vacha parama vidhusho manda sarani, Kwa they matha brahma pramukha vidhushaamaptha vachasaam, Aabhoonmay visphoorthi para thara mahimnasthava nuthi, Prasidham kshanathavyam bahulathaa chapalya miha may. 54 Oh mother, where is the wisdom of me. who does not know god, And whose flow of words are of extremely slow pace,

And where is the prayer to you, not even properly understood, By Gods like Brahma who are very knowledgeable about Vedas? Some how I got an idea of doing it and then completed it, And please pardon the extremely thoughtless action from my part. Praseeda para devathe mama hrudhi prabhootham bhayam, Vidhaaraya daridhrathaam dalaya dehi sarvagnathaam, Nidehi karuna nidhe charana padma yugmam swakam, Nivaraya jara mruthi Tripura sundari Sree Shive. 55 Please Bless me, Oh supreme Goddess and remove, The great fear which occupies my mind, Please remove my poverty, give me wisdom, To know everything, Oh ocean of mercy, Please offer me both your lotus like feet, Oh Tripura Sundari who is the consort of Lord Shiva, Remove the repeated birth and death in my case. Ithi Tripurasundari sthuthi mimam patedhya sudhee, Sa sarva durithaatavi patala, chanda, dhaavaanala, Bhaven manasi vanchitha praditha sidhi budhirr bhave, Daneka vidha sampadhaam pada manaya thgulyo bhaveth. 56 If a good wise man reads this prayer of Tripurasundari, He becomes similar to the raging forest fire, To the dense forest of committed sins and, The occult powers desired by him will increase, And he would become incomparable by, Becoming the store house of different types of wealth. Prithwi pala prakata, mukuta sthragrajo rajithamgri, Vidhyuthpunja nathi nuthi samaradhitho bhadhithaari, Vidhya sarva kalayathi hrudha vyakarothi pravaachaa, Lokascharyar nava padair indu bimba prakasai. 57 He would have a feet shining by the pollen grains, Of the garlands tied in the crowns of great kings, He would be appreciated by salutations and Chanting of prayers of the society of learned people, He would have no enemies and all the knowledge, Would automatically be known to his mind, He would shine like moon and would be capable, Of talking using newer words and astound the world. Sangeetham girije kavithwa saranim chaamnaaya vakya smruthe, Vyakhaanam hrudhi thaavakeena charana dwandham cha sarvagnatham, Sradham karmani kalike thi vipula sri jrumbhanam mandhire, Soundarya vapushi prakasa mathulam prapnothi vidhwan kavi. 58 Oh daughter of the mountain, he who is the scholar and poet, Would attain knowledge of music and writing poems, Get the strength of writing commentary for Vedas and smrithis,

He would be able to appreciate your feet within his mind, He would know everything, develop interest in duties of the home, Would develop the exuberance of the sight from Lakshmi, And also would have beauty of the body and unmatched power. Bhooshyam vaidhushya mudhyath dinakara kiranaakara makaara theja, Suvyaktham bhakthi margam nigama nigaditham durgamam yoga margam, AAyushyam brahma poshyam hara giri visadhaam keerthi mabhyethya bhoomou, DEhaanthe brahma paaram para shiva charanaakara mabhyethi vidhwaan. 59 That scholar would get scholarship which would be appreciable, Have luster of the body equal to rising Sun, He would attain the path of devotion as well as, The path of yoga as enunciated in the Vedas, He would experience the life span allotted by Lord Brahma, He would have fame in this world, as tall as Kailasa mountain, And after death would attain the Nirvana of Brahma and feet of Lord Shiva. Durvaasaa mahitha muneeswarena, Vidhya kala yuvathi manmatha moorthinai thath, Stotram vyadhayi ruchiram Tripurabikaya, Vedagamika patali Vidhaika moorthe. 60 This very pretty prayer to the Tripurambika, Who is the one and only one God known, To all the Vedas and Agama collection Has been written by the great divine saint called Durvasa, Who is like the cupid to those women, Who are experts in knowledge and austerities. Sada sadanugraha nigraha grahitha muni vigraho Bhagwan, SArvaasaa mupanishadhaam Durvasaa jayathi DEsika Pradhama. 61 The god of gods who has taken the form to punish and reward, The good as well as the bad, who is the form of a sage, And who is the primeval teacher of all Upanishads, Has taken the form of sage Durvasa, let him be victorious. Ithi Sri Durvasa muneendrena virachitham, Shakthi mahimna stotram sampoornam. Thus ends the prayer of the greaness of Goddess Shakthi, Written by the king of sages Durvasa.

[Kalidasawas perhaps the greatest of the Sanskrit poets. He has written greatdramas like Shakunthalam and great epics like Kumara Sambhavam,Malavikagni Mithram, the message poetry called Megha Sandesham etc. Heis extremely famous for the use of appropriate similes and metaphors.Shyamala Dandakam is perhaps the greatest stotra written by himeulogizing the mother goddess - Shyamala. He has employed a poeticstyle called Dandakam in writing this prayer. Dandakam is that poetrywhere some of the lines have more than 26 syllables. It very muchresembles prose. In this case, the entire Dandakam is a single sentencefrom start to the end. I have attempted to retain the same style. Thereis a folk story about how he came about to write this stotra. He was afoolish wood cutter. The courtiers of a proud princess made him act asa wise man and made the princess marry him. The princess advised thewood cutter to enter in to a temple of kali, when she goes out for awalk and lock himself in. When Kali came back, the wood cutter refusedto allow her in, unless she makes him wise. She did that. ShyamalaDandakam is supposed to be the first prayer of this wood cutter to Kaliafter he became wise]) Manikhya veenaam upalalayanthim, Madalasam manjula vaag vilasam, Mahendra Neela dhyuthi komalangim, Mathanga kanyam manasa smarami. 1 I meditate on the daughter of Matanga, Who plays the veena made of precious gems, Who has become lazy due to her exuberance, Who is blessed with very sweet words, Who has a pretty mien which shines like the blue gem. Chathurbhuje Chandra kala vathamse, Kuchonnathe kumkuma raga sone, Pundrekshu pasangusa pushpa bana, Hasthe namasthe jagadaika matha. 2 My salutations to that mother of universe, Who has four hands, Who wears the crescent as an ornament, Who has very high breasts, Who is of the colour of saffron, And who holds flower, sugar cane, rope, arrow, The goad and pundareeka in her hands. Matha marakatha shyama, Mathangi madha shalini, Kuryath kadaksham kalyani kadambha vana vasini. 3 Please bless me with a side long glance, Oh daughter of sage Mathanga, Who is my mother, Who is as green as an emerald, Who is exuberant, Who blesses with all that is good, And who lives in the forest of Kadambha*. *Kadambha is a tree called Nauclea cadamba. Ramachander [Sitala is the goddess of Epidemics, usually found in the North Indian states and there the whole country side prays to her when there is an epidemic. She is the North Indian version of the village Goddess Mari and is usually portrayed as a woman sitting on a donkey holding a broom in one hand and a winnowing fan in the other. She might be naked or wearing a red dress. But this prayer is very popular in Kerala where in olden times people used to consider it as an effective antidote against all diseases. Since she is considered as mother, the Tantriks believe that she is easily approachable. Most of her followers do not see her different from Goddess Kali. Unlike Kali, she holds in her hand skull, flower sword and a pair of scissors. There is a great temple dedicated to her in Tarapith, Bengal. She also has a temple in Ghatagaon, near Bhubaneswar in Orissa. She is also called Neela SaraswathI. Some people believe that Bhagalamukhi is her external manifestation. Here is a very rare octet addressed to her from a book called Neelathanthra.] 1. Oh mother without any doubt, the devas killed their enemies in war, Due to the dust of your lotus like pair of feet touching their crowns, And those devas shine in this world without any equal because of it, And others destroy themselves thinking that no one is equal to them. 7. Thwannama smaranath palaayanaparaa drushtum cha saktha na they, Bhootha pretha pisacha Rakshasa ganaa yakshancha naagadhipaa, Daithya dhanava pungavascha khacharaa vyagradhikaa janthavo, Dakinya kupitha anthakascha manujam matha kshanam bhoothale. Oh Goddess, by the service of your feet man as per his desire gets, Wealth, power to travel in sky, magical powers, Power to stop water, power to control elephants, attracting the world, And he gets prettiness of god of love and even a fool gets mastery over knowledge. 9. Tharashtakamidham ramyam bhakthiman ya paden nara, Prathar madhyahna kale cha Sayahna niyatha suchi 10. Labhathe kavithaam divyaam sarva Sasthra vidh bhavedh, Lakkshmee naswaraam prapya bhukthwa bogaan yadhepsithaan, 11. If a man who is a devotee reads this pretty octet of Tara daily, After purification in the morning, non and evening, He would become a divine poet, he would understand all Sasthras, He would get wealth which is permanent and enjoy all the pleasures he desires. He would get fame, handsomeness and would be liked by everyone, And his fame will spread all over the world and at the end he would get salvation. By Sage Pundareeka Translated by P. R. Ramachander [This prayer is addressed to Thulasi (ocimum sanctum) called in English as the sacred Basil. She is also called Vrinda. This plant is considered to be an incarnation of the consort of Lord Vishnu. Devotees believe that if the leaves of Thulasi are offered to Lord Vishnu, he would bless us with all that we want. There are many mythological tales associated with Thulasi. There is more than one mythological version relating to the origin of the Thulasi plant. One is that Sri Lakshmi was born to Dharmadhwaja's wife Madhavi. Her parents named her Tulasi. Being beautiful and virtuous, she was married to Vishnu. Vishnu desired her to cast off her body and stay with him in spirit. Her body then became the river Gandaki. Vishnu's body become the Saaligrama stone and resided in the river. Sri Lakshmi's hair grew into a plant, become the famous Tulasi, an object of worship.* There is also another version. Tulasi was the wife of Jalandhara, a water demon, who caused great suffering to people. Lord Vishnu had to abduct her to kill Jalandhara. Lord Vishnu then lifted the plant to higher level by placing her leaves on His head. It is also said that Vishnu abducted Tulasi to help Shiva kill the demon. Yet another version recites that Sarasvati's curse once turned Lakshmi into a Tulasi plant and forced her to live on the earth causing Vishnu to come down from Heaven and stay near her as the Salagrama. That is why the Salagrama is to be found under the river Gandaki on the bank of which the Sal tree grows and also in the Narmada river from which many Brahmin communities migrated to South India later on. Salagrama being Bhagavan Vishnu's counterpart for Sri Lakshmi's Tulasi, this sacred stone, now considered to be an ammonite fossil, which is also eulogized in the Puranas. There is also a story in Uthara Ramayana about a lady who was doing prayers to become the wife of Vishnu. It seems Ravana tried to molest her. The lady cursed him and jumped in the fire and became Thulasi. This prayer is written by Sage Pundareeka who lived in Thirukdalmallai in Tamil Nadu. It seems he used to worship the Lord with lotus flowers. One day the Lord himself appeared before him in the form of a poor hungry old man. When the sage went to bring food, the old man turned in to the idol of Vishnu and all the lotus flowers he worshipped earlier was on the body of Lord Vishnus idol.] Jagad dhathri namasthubhyam, Vishoncha Priya vallabhe, Yathro Brahmadayo deva, Srushti sthithyantha karina. 1 Salutations to mother of the universe, Who is the darling wife of Lord Vishnu, And due to you only, Brahma and others, Are engaged in creation, upkeep and destruction. The reference I have in Malayalam ascribes this prayer toAdhi Shankara Bhagawat Pada. [Thesound which emanates from mooladhara is indistinct and micro and iscalled Para. From there, when it reaches the belly button, it slightlybecomes distinct and is called Pasyanthi .When it further travels andreaches the heart, it is called Madhyama: and when it reaches thethroat , it becomes distinct and pronounceable and is called Vaikhari.These are the different alphabets, which have developed from the microsound and are 51 in number. Composed by Sage Yagna Valkya Translated by P. R. Ramachander [There was a great sage called Vaishampayana. He had several great disciples and the foremost among them was Yagna Valkya. Once Vaishampayana committed a great sin and got the Brahmahathi (sin committed by killing a Brahmin) dosha. Vaishampayana requested all his disciples to do some religious ceremonies so that he can get rid of the sin. The proud Yagna Valkya told his guru that he himself can do all that is needed easily. There was no need for other disciples to do anything. Vaishampayana got very angry at these words and ordered Vaishampayana to return all the knowledge including the Vedas that he has taught him. Yagna Valkya vomited all the knowledge that he has learnt. Vaishampayana became a bird and ate all that was vomited by Yagna Valkya. At this moment, Yagna Valkya became one without Vedas. He recited the following prayer to Goddess Saraswathi and then requested Sun God to teach him Vedas and all other knowledge. Sun God said, he could do it provided Yagna Valkya stood facing his chariot and walked in reverse with the same speed as his chariot. Yagna Valkya, did this. The Veda that he learned from Sun God is known as Shukla Yajur Veda (White Yajur Veda) and the Veda propagated by Vaishampayana is known as Krishna Yajur Veda (Black Yajur Veda).] Brahma swaroopa parama jyothi swaroopaa sanathani, Sarva vidhyathi devya thasyai vanya namo nama. 1 Salutations and Salutations to Vani, Who is the form of Lord Brahma, Who is always, the form of light, And who is the goddess of all learning. Translated by P. R. Ramachander [Varahi is one of the saptha mathrukas (seven mothers) who aided the devi in her fight against Shumbha, Nishumbha and their armies. She is described to have human body with eight arms, head of a boar and also having three eyes. In the Sri Vidhya tradition, she is also called the Danda-natha (Lady Commander of the forces of the mothergoddess, symbolizing the might of Sri Vidya). As Varahi (hog-faced or the great consumer) she destroys evil forces that obstructs the devotees progress, paralyses the enemies and lead the devotees ultimately to SriVidyas. She is classed as the fifth among the seven mother-like divinities (Saptmatrukas) and hence also called Panchami. With Kurukulla, she is accorded the parental status to Sri-Chakra (Lalitha Tripura-Sundari). While Kurukulla represents the full moon, Varahi (the devoured) represents the new-moon. And while Varahi represents the illumination (prakasa) aspects of the mother-goddess, Kurukulla is the deliberation (vimarsa) aspect. In another aspect, Varahi is also said to be one of the Yoginis, taking the form of a boar. She is said to lift up the earth with her tusks to confer benefits on all creatures. She is imagined as an eight-armed and three-eyed lady

with a face of a hog, seated under a Palmyra tree, and functioning as a trusted attendant of the Goddess as her chief counselor. In this form she is known as Chaitanya-bhairavi (the devotee's association of strength) She is being described as a fierce (Maha-Ghora) and as Commander of the forces, she moves about in a chariot drawn by boars. She is said to reside in the ocean of sugar-cane juice (ikshu), one of the four oceans that surrounds the mother goddess, holding her court in the island of nine-jewels, and facing the mother-goddess. [The octet of death addressed to Varahi] Translated by P. R. Ramachander [Varahi is one of the saptha mathrukas (seven mothers) who aided the devi in her fight against Shumbha, Nishumbha and their armies. She is described to have human body with eight arms, head of a boar and also having three eyes. In the Sri Vidhya tradition, she is also called the Danda-natha (Lady Commander of the forces of the mothergoddess, symbolizing the might of Sri Vidya). As Varahi (hog-faced or the great consumer) she destroys evil forces that obstructs the devotees progress, paralyses the enemies and lead the devotees ultimately to SriVidyas. She is classed as the fifth among the seven mother-like divinities (Saptmatrukas) and hence also called Panchami. With Kurukulla, she is accorded the parental status to Sri-Chakra (Lalitha Tripura-Sundari). While Kurukulla represents the full moon, Varahi (the devoured) represents the new-moon. And while Varahi represents the illumination (prakasa) aspects of the mother-goddess, Kurukulla is the deliberation (vimarsa) aspect. In another aspect, Varahi is also said to be one of the Yoginis, taking the form of a boar. She is said to lift up the earth with her tusks to confer benefits on all creatures. She is imagined as an eight-armed and three-eyed lady with a face of a hog, seated under a Palmyra tree, and functioning as a trusted attendant of the Goddess as her chief counselor. In this form she is known as Chaitanya-bhairavi (the devotees association of strength) She is being described as a fierce (Maha-Ghora) and as Commander of the forces, she moves about in a chariot drawn by boars. She is said to reside in the ocean of sugar-cane juice (ikshu), one of the four oceans that surrounds the mother goddess, holding her court in the island of nine-jewels, and facing the mother-goddess. Sukha soubhagya sampanno, manasvee budhiman bhaved, Puthravan gunavan sreshto bhoga bhoktha cha manava. 28 He would lead a life luck and pleasure, Become by mind intelligent, Get children be of good character, And would enjoy all pleasures. Idham stotram maha punyam Lakshmy agasthya prakeerthitham, Vishnu prasada jananam, chaturvarga phala pradham. 29 This prayer which was sung about Lakshmi, By the sage Agasthya is greatly blessed, Brings the grace of Lord Vishnu, And gives four types of wealth. Rajadware jayaschaiva, sathroschiva parajaya, Bhootha pretha pisachanam, vyagranam na bhayam thadha. 30 This would grant success in the door of the king, Lead to the defeat of our enemy, And is the remover of fears of ghosts, Dead souls and tigers. Na sasthra anala thyaougathbhayam thasya prajayathe, Durvruthanam cha papanam bahu hanikaram param. 31 Neither armaments, nor fire nor water would cause fear to him, And bad natured and sinners would greatly be harmed. Mandhurakari salasugavam goshte samahitha, Padeth dosha santhyartham, maha pathaka nasanam. 32 He would be happy with properties and herds of cows, And reading it as an antidote for problems and Would completely destroy effects of great sins. [Opposite Prathyangira Prayer] Given by Sri Yogeswaranandji Translated by P. R. Ramachander [Prathyangira Devi is also known as Atharvana Bhadra Kali and also as Narasimhika Devi. There are various stories about her origin. It seems after Lord Nrasimha killed Hiranyakasipu, his anger grew unboundedly. The devas tried all their best to calm him down. When Prahlada and Goddess Lakshmi were not able to pacify him (Many people believe that they individually were able to pacify him), Lord Shiva took the incarnation of Sharabha Deva (a mixture of man, lion and eagle). He also failed. Then Goddess Parvathi appeared from the ferocious eyes of Sharabha deva) with 1008 heads and 2016 hands and roared ferociously. This pacified Lord Narasimha. Others believe that Goddess Lakshmi took a form of woman lion and (also called Prathyangira) and pacified him. This stotra is addressed to Prathyangira devi requesting her grace to kill our enemies. Please do not chant this Manthra without getting it from a Guru. It is believed that if it is not done that way, such trials would lead to very horrible effects.
