Homework Assignment 1 Due Sept. 16, Friday A.

Porosity Determination Problem (10 points) In the lab you are analyzing a carbonate core plug (ma=2.87 g/cm3) that has the following dimensions: Length=4 and Diameter = 1.5. The sample weighs 277.95 g when it is saturated with a light oil (o=0.95 g/cm3) and 251.03 g when it is dry. 1. Calculate the bulk volume 2. Calculate the bulk density of the sample in this oil saturated condition 3. Calculate the pore volume 4.Calculate the porosity 5. Is the porosity calculated above the total porosity or the effective porosity? (2 points) (2 points) (2 points) (1 points) (1 points)

6. What will be the bulk density (b) of the sample if the pore space is fully saturated with air

(air=0.001225 g/cc). (hint: remember the relationship

(2 points)

B. Porosity Determination in the Lab (10 points) In the lab you are analyzing another carbonate core plug. You have decided to use the Archimedes principle for determining the bulk density more accurately so you first weighed the sample in air and recorded 837.475 g. You then coated the sample with paraffin (paraffin=0.8 g/cm3) and weighed the sample again. The weight of the sample in air with the paraffin is 841.475 g. Now you immersed the paraffin-coated sample in water (water=1.0 g/cm3) completely and recorded an apparent weight of 488.975 g. 1. Calculate the bulk volume of the sample in cm3. (5 points)

2. Now you removed the paraffin and vacuum-saturated the sample in a desiccator containing water and after 24 hours (when you are sure that the sample is completely saturated) you weighed the saturated sample and recoded 875.914 g. Calculate the pore volume and then, the porosity. (5 points)
