Grandpa finishes triathlon

PANAMA CITY BEACH, Florida (AP): An 82yearold California man become the oldest, person ever to complete an Ironman triathlon, although he didnt make it under the 17 hour time limit. Norton Davey of Oceanside, California, completed Saturdays Isuzu Ironman Florida Triathlon with an unofficial time of 18 hours, 20 minutes. The event consists of a 3.9-kilometer swim, 180 kms cycle and 42.2 Sunday, April 15, 2012 kms run.

Grandpa finishes triathlon

Davey finished the swim in just under two hours; but missed the bike cutoff by five minutes. Race officials allowed him to continue the event, and he crossed the finish line at 1:20 a.m. Sunday. A crowd of about50 officials, volunteers and spectators greeted Davey at the finish line, including Ironman North America

Java Landslides kill 52

Incessant rain has hampered rescue efforts. At least 52 people have been killed by landslides in Indonesia after days of heavy rain buried 14 villages under mud in the central province of Java. This is the second series of landslides in a week to hit the province. Local officials say dozens of villages have been affected. Ten people are still missing, as the deluge continues. President Abdurrahman Wahid has visited the worst-hit district Bagelan. Food and money are being distributed to those who have lost their homes. The latest landslides hit the hilly district of Purworejo , about 400km(250 miles) south-east of Jakarta, early on Sunday. Most of the villagers were asleep when their h omes were engulfed.

The Kompas newspaper said the landslides hit the hilly district of Purworejo in the early hours of Sunday after three days of heavy rain. Most residents were sleeping when the mud buried seven villages in the area, 400 km (240 miles) southeast of Jakarta, the daily said. It said the death toll was likely to climb as rescures continued to comb the area searching for bodies.
